Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and RNLI issue water safety advice ahead of June Bank Holiday

Ahead of the June Bank Holiday weekend, the Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI are urging the public to stay safe if planning an activity on or near the water.

While air temperatures are warmer, sea and inland water temperatures remain low. This contrast can present a hidden but serious risk of cold water shock and hypothermia to anyone entering or unexpectedly falling into the water.

Even on warm, sunny days, water temperatures are often below 15°C, cold enough to trigger cold water shock. This sudden reaction can cause involuntary gasping, panic, and loss of breathing control, greatly increasing the risk of drowning.

While a large number of people are expected to visit the coast or inland waterways over the bank holiday weekend, for many this will be their first dip of the season. Remember to enter the water slowly, splash yourself to acclimatise, keep your dips short and stay within your depth. Don’t go alone, swim with others, always stay together, and ensure everyone leaves the water safely.

If you’re planning an activity in or on the water, remember:
🌊Check weather and tides before heading out, and carry a means of calling for help such as a fully charged mobile phone
🛟Always wear a correctly fitted and serviced lifejacket or buoyancy aid
🍸 Avoid alcohol as it impairs judgement, coordination, and reaction time
📱Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

If you fall into the water unexpectedly or get into difficulty, remember:
Float to Live
Stay calm and fight any instinct to panic or thrash around
Tilt your head back, with your ears submerged
Relax and try to breathe normally
Move your hands and feet to help you stay afloat. It’s fine if your legs sink, we all float differently
Once you’ve regained control of your breathing, call for help or raise your hand or swim to safety if you are able.

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Ch 16 or dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

A busy couple of weeks for training and assessments at Arranmore RNLI.

Joe Doherty had a Tier 1 crew assessment, JJ O Donnell for a Tier 2 crew assessment, our Coxswain Kieran O Donnell attended an LTA (local trainer assessor) course and can now assess our Tier1 crew members, also our semi-resident relief coxswain Trevor Deveraux had a mechanics assessment at the station, a busy week and all passed with flying colours.

To top it all off, new crew member Bernard O Donnell (Pictured below with Kieran) received his pager and is now ready to answer the call.

Training is a vital component at every station, as it ensures that crews are best prepared for all emergencies, and are ready and competent when the pagers sound.

Well done to all our volunteers in their recent pass-outs in various levels of training and thank you all for your continued commitment to answering the call 🚨

Due to the success of her previous RNLI fundraiser, Isobel McCauley & her dog Hubble have decided to take on the Mayday Mile Challenge to support RNLI volunteers.

In this challenge they will walk a mile-a-day throughout the month of May to help RNLI crews save lives at sea.

As summer approaches, beaches and coastal areas become busier with people enjoying the sunshine and spending time in or around the water. But with more visitors comes an increase in emergencies and calls for help.

By supporting this Mayday appeal with a donation, you can help provide RNLI volunteers with the equipment, training, and resources they need to respond when lives are at risk — especially during their busiest time of year.

Will you sponsor her RNLI Mayday Mile Challenge and support the courageous crews? https://fundraise.rnli.org/fundraisers/isobelmccauley/mayday-mile-eur

Best of luck Isobel 👏

It was great to welcome Allan & Helen to our station today. Best of luck for your final 19 stations visits!

It is with profound sadness that we extend our heartfelt condolences to our fellow search and rescue colleagues at Marine Rescue NSW after the tragic incident that resulted in the loss of two of their volunteer crew in Ballina, Australia.

It is a stark reminder of the dangers that are associated with search and rescue operations across the globe on a daily basis.

All at Arranmore RNLI are keeping the families, friends, colleagues, communities and everyone affected by this terrible tragedy in our thoughts this evening.

May their courage, commitment and dedication to saving lives in this life, be rewarded in the next 🧡

Ba mhaith linn uilig ag Stáisiún RNLI Árainn Mhór ár gcomhbhrón a ghabh le clann Moya Brennan a fuair bás le déanaí.

Ceoltóir den chéad scoth a bhí inti a chuir cultúr agus oidhreacht na Tíre chun cinn i gcónaí.

D’oscail Moya ár stáisiún nua sa bhliain 2024 agus labhair sí go hiontach ar an lá

All at Arranmore Lifeboat Station would like to extend our condolences to the family of Moya Brennan that has recently passed away.

Moya was an excellent singer and musician who never failed to put the country’s culture and heritage to the fore.

She opened our new station in 2024, where she spoke excellently on the day.

We were very grateful to Mamie McKinney, Lower Cruit, Kincasalagh (through David Alcorn) who donated €50 euro to the Arranmore RNLI today.

Pictured below is RNLI fundraiser Frank Greene (Right) and David Alcorn (Left).

As a charity, we depend completely on donations made by the general public throughout the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, to ensure that our Volunteer crews can continue to help Save Lives At Sea.

Thank you again Mamie for your generousity.

Busy week for Arranmore RNLI with four calls for assistance:

The volunteer crew of Arranmore RNLI experienced one of its busiest weeks this year.

The first call came on Sunday 8 March at 7.37 at the request of Malin Head Coast Guard, to assist with a medical evacuation from the island. On Saturday 14 the crew were called out twice to assist with further medical evacuations and on Sunday 15 they were asked to bring the NOWDOC (North West doctor on call) to the island.

Coxswain Kieran O’Donnell said ‘ The nature of our service means we can be requested to a call for assistance any time day or night and as an emergency service the crew are ready to respond at a moment’s notice. From the time our pagers go off we can be on board the lifeboat within 10-12 minutes. My thanks to all the volunteer crew for their willingness, dedication and professionalism in answering the call to launch without hesitation. I would like to wish everybody a safe St. Patrick’s Day and if you do see someone in difficulty on the water please dial 999/112 and ask for the Coast Guard.’
