What better way to celebrate 🌊 World Ocean Day than by looking back on our collective effort to map the diversity and distribution of Indonesia’s sharks and rays?

Since 2020, EPI’s citizen science platform has brought together reports from contributors across the country, helping to uncover the stories of these fascinating creatures — one observation at a time.

It’s a reminder of what World Ocean Day is all about: when we work together, we can achieve so much more! 💙

— The Kalabia Rangers lead night trips to observe epaulette sharks (a.k.a Kalabia) off the coast of Arborek Island. With 🔦 headlamps on and 📷 cameras in hand, they search for these “walking sharks.”

By photographing the shark’s side profile—capturing its unique body patterns—we can identify individual sharks. This information is valuable for studying the species’ population.

If you’re in the Raja Ampat area, you can join them on a trip. Contact for more information!

— Kalabia Rangers melakukan perjalanan malam untuk mengamati hiu epaulette (atau disebut juga sebagai Kalabia) di perairan sekitar Pulau Arborek. Dengan 🔦 lampu kepala menyala dan 📷 kamera di tangan, mereka mencari “hiu berjalan” ini.

Dengan memotret profil samping tubuh hiu—yang menampilkan pola uniknya—kita dapat mengidentifikasi individu yang berbeda. Informasi ini sangat penting untuk mempelajari populasi spesies tersebut.

Apart from studying the rhinorays, we spend a lot of our time connecting and discussing with the people who live the closest to them: the local community of Karimunjawa

We believe listening to their perspectives is key when we want to develop a conservation and management plan for rhinorays - a plan that can be beneficial for both the species and the community

Beberapa minggu yang lalu, EPI bersama Departemen Kelautan FPIK Undip menggelar kelas untuk mengupas tentang konservasi hiu dan pari 🦈

Selama ini, Elasmo-Class adalah sesi belajar dan diskusi kecil antara tim dan intern-intern EPI. Tapi untuk pertama kalinya, kami menggelar Elasmo-Class untuk publik! ✨

EPI berbagi pengalaman dan pembelajaran dari kegiatan riset dan konservasi yang telah kami lakukan sejak 2022. Kegiatan ditutup dengan sesi diskusi seru bersama seluruh peserta.

Setelah ini, Elasmo-Class kita laksanakan dimana yaa? 🤔 Berikan usul di bawah!

🦈 We have been featured in the latest Shark News | Issue 13 | April 2026

This time we had the chance to share our story from Karimunjawa, where we work with fishers to map important habitats for the rhinorays (aka. the shark-like rays)

The results are coming together, as we have identified several hotspots and (what is possibly..) important habitats for the species. More research is underway! 💪
