In many classrooms today, teachers are doing their best with lesson plans that once worked. Industries, however, are evolving at such a speed where tools change within months, not even years. In between? Students. Eager, capable, but too often trained for a world that has already moved on.

Why Finding Talent Is Only Half the Battle for MSMEs

Conversations on Indonesia’s MSMEs’ competitiveness usually revolve around access to finance or digitalisation. Rarely does it begin with a hiring decision. The truth is, most MSMEs struggle because the wrong hire can quietly cost them months of growth. For entrepreneurs like Agnes Widjaja, founder of one of Indonesia’s pioneering breastfeeding support products, Mamabear, finding the right person determines whether her business moves forward or stands still.

When Aceh Tenggara’s cocoa joined the world's Top 50 Cocoa of Excellence and won a Gold Award in Amsterdam, it proved our farmers belong on the global stage.

The picture changed when viewed through the eyes of those closest to the field.

Andre Syahrizal, a 25-year-old cocoa nursery owner admitted, "Some periods bring enough supply. Others do not. When planting material becomes difficult to source, nursery production slows down, regardless of how many farmers are ready to buy."

The same challenge is felt further down the value chain. Hardi, a cocoa farmer has spent more than sixteen years watching the industry evolve. He knows that aging cocoa trees need to be replaced and as he put it, "without quality planting material, progress had to wait."

Watch the video to see how local ownership and collaboration on the ground are trying to shift today's achievement to tomorrow's sustainable harvest.

The Farmers and Market Were Ready, so Why Did Growth Slow Down?

Across the province, numbers from the 2025 Aceh Plantation Statistics indicated a nearly 10% shrinkage in cocoa plantations in just four years. Land was being converted to other uses, and production was under pressure. Cocoa farmers and nursery owners witnessed a different reality.

According to Hendra, Head of the Plantation Division at the Agriculture Office of Aceh Tenggara Regency, success depends on much more than planting trees. He explains, “The initiative must be built on careful planning, certified superior seedlings, suitable land selection, modern cultivation practices, and supporting infrastructure.” The emphasis on standards is important because quality planting material does not appear by chance. Every productive cocoa tree represents a chain of decisions that begins years earlier. This includes everything from the origin of the genetic material to the management system and the process through which seedlings reach farmers.

In the past two years, Andre had been producing cocoa seedlings for farmers who wanted to rehabilitate their farms and improve productivity. Orders came in as farmers showed increased interest. Though the market was there, surging demand came with difficulties due to inconsistent availability of the raw materials needed to produce quality seedlings. Like many nursery operators in the region, Andre relied on scattered farmer plots for quality planting materials. “Some periods bring enough supply. Others do not. When planting material becomes difficult to source, nursery production slows down, regardless of how many farmers are ready to buy,” Andre recalled.

A cocoa tree is not forever. As trees age, productivity declines. Farmers know they should replace old trees with stronger varieties, but the decision is costly. Without access to reliable planting material, rehabilitation becomes harder and slower. This is a conversation about family income more than it is about seeds. About whether a harvest can help pay school expenses and whether a farmer's hard work will yield better results five years from now instead of just helping them survive the next season. To Hardi, easier access to quality planting material means farmers can rejuvenate their farms with more confidence.

Award Recognises Achievement, but Collaboration Sustains the Cocoa Journey in Aceh Tenggara.

Earlier this year, fermented cocoa from Aceh Tenggara earned a Gold Award and a place among the Top 50 Cocoa of Excellence 2026 in Amsterdam, one of the world's most respected benchmarks of cocoa quality. For a district whose economy and livelihoods have long been intertwined with agriculture, the recognition was a source of pride. It was proof that Aceh Tenggara's cocoa could compete on a global stage. Though achievement is a snapshot in time, growth is what comes next.
