Children protect what they learn to love 🌿

At , our Jungle School around uses a Montessori-inspired education program to connect children with nature, wildlife, and rainforest ecosystems.

Through outdoor exploration, creative activities, and hands-on learning, children discover the importance of orangutans, forests, rivers, insects, and biodiversity in North Sumatra 🌱🦧

Nature education helps children develop curiosity, empathy, independence, and respect for the environment. By learning directly in the rainforest, they become future protectors of wildlife and their communities.

Education + Conservation = A stronger future for the rainforest 💚

🌿🐒 Siamang: The Voice of the Rainforest 🐒🌿

Deep in the rainforests of Sumatra lives the amazing , the largest species of gibbon and one of the forest’s most important seed dispersers.

Siamangs spend almost their entire lives in the trees, swinging through the canopy and singing powerful morning songs with their families. Their loud calls help protect their territory and keep strong family bonds.

🍃 Siamangs mainly eat: • Fruits
• Leaves
• Flowers
• Seeds

By spreading seeds across the forest, they help regenerate the rainforest and maintain biodiversity. Healthy siamangs mean healthy forests. 🌱

⚠️ But siamangs are in danger: ❌ Deforestation
❌ Palm oil expansion
❌ Habitat loss
❌ Illegal wildlife trade
❌ Forest fragmentation

Without rainforest protection, these incredible primates could disappear from many areas of Sumatra.

🌏 How can we help? ✔️ Support ethical ecotourism
✔️ Protect rainforest habitats
✔️ Never support wildlife exploitation
✔️ Support local conservation projects
✔️ Promote sustainable community development

At sumatratrekking.com, ethical wildlife watching helps support conservation and local communities around the rainforest of North Sumatra.

Together with ibubumiorangutan.org, we work to protect wildlife, forests, and environmental education for future generations. 🌿

🌿 Support wildlife & Protect Sumatra’s Rainforest 🌿

Every day, the rainforests of North Sumatra face deforestation, habitat loss, and threats to wildlife like Tiger, orangutans, gibbons, and countless unique species. At Ibu Bumi Orangutan, we are working on the ground to protect these ecosystems, empower local communities, and create sustainable solutions through conservation and ecotourism.
💚 Why your donation matters:
Your support helps us:

We are so happy and grateful to have Panut the founder of OIC in our activities at Batu Katak last Monday.
Lucky us to learn about Orangutan and conservation.
His powerful job and love life to preserve forest and wildlife give us energy to continue also with our conservation programs in Sumatra.
Thanks 🙏❤️

Women’s activities

Whilst historically women have been sidelined from economic activity and earning income, we are proud to organise a range of activities to help empower local women and develop opportunities for earning income. Our volunteers play a vital role in our programs and are often keen to join the activities, learn from local women, and support the work. In addition to enabling local women to earn an income, the activities we run are also geared towards our overarching conservation projects.

One such activity is syrup production, using locally grown fruits to produce marmalades, jams and syrups, which are then bottled, labelled and sold, with profits going to the local women producing them. As an NGO, we support through providing fruits and materials, alongside a volunteer workforce eager to assist. The final products are purchased by ecotourists visiting and staying at the guest house in Batu Katak. In order to protect the fruit trees from visiting Orangutans, we help the women plant additional trees as barriers to protect the harvestable fruit. This helps prevent human-wildlife conflict and ensures the project is sustainable in the long-term

Protecting the Heart of Sumatra: Ibu Bumi Orangutan

North Sumatra is home to one of the most biodiverse places on Earth: The Gunung Leuser National Park. It is a sanctuary for the "People of the Forest", the Sumatran Orangutan, as well as tigers, elephants, gibbons, Sunbears and the endemic Thomas's Leaf Monkey.

But the forest is under siege. Between 2014 and 2024 alone, the region lost 3.68 million hectares of natural forest. As palm oil plantations expand, these ancient corridors are severed, leaving wildlife trapped in fragmented "islands" of green. With only 14,000 orangutans and fewer than 300 tigers remaining, we are at a tipping point.

Our Mission: Conservation Through Community

Ibu Bumi Orangutan is a grassroots NGO operating directly on the border of this World Heritage site. We believe that conservation only works when the community thrives alongside the wildlife.

Currently, we fund our work through Sumatra Trekking, directing 10% of all booking fees into our projects. However, the scale of the crisis requires us to move faster. We are seeking your help to launch three critical "Legacy Projects" that will secure the enclave for generations to come.

🌳✨ Educating the future guardians of the rainforest ✨🌳
Around Gunung Leuser National Park, children grow up beside one of the richest rainforests on Earth. Through our environmental education program, Ibu Bumi Orangutan together with Yayasan Binuri and local village chefs, we teach children to love, respect, and protect nature 🌱🦧
From learning about orangutans and forests, education becomes fun, meaningful, and rooted in culture. When children understand nature, they protect it 💚
Environmental education is not just learning — it’s planting hope for the future.
