The first session of the Rice Farmer Field School (FFS) under the Sustainable Pesticide Management Framework (SPMF) Program was successfully conducted on April 28, 2026, in Pematang Sijonam, with the participation of 30 local farmers. This Farmer Field School is part of the collaborative initiative between Bayer, as a member of CropLife Indonesia, and HarvestPlus Solutions through the SPMF Program, aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices while strengthening farmers’ technical capacity.

In this first meeting, farmers received practical learning sessions on several key topics, including the use of the Paddy Soil Test Kit (PUTS), seed selection, and seed treatment practices. One of the key sessions was the seed treatment presentation delivered by Bayer’s technical partner team, highlighting the importance of proper seed preparation as a critical first step toward achieving healthy crop establishment. Seed treatment offers multiple benefits for rice cultivation. It helps protect seeds from early-stage pests and diseases, improves seed germination and seedling vigor, supports more uniform crop growth, and can significantly reduce potential yield losses.

An equally important practical lesson demonstrated during the session was the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during seed treatment application. Farmers were encouraged to always use appropriate PPE to minimize direct exposure to treatment materials, ensuring their health and safety while handling agricultural inputs.

The training on the use of the Paddy Soil Test Kit (PUTS) was successfully conducted for students of the Faculty of Agriculture at UPMI (Universitas Pemberdayaan Masyarakat Indonesia), held at the UPMI campus in Medan on April 27, 2026. This activity is part of the follow-up action initiated by UPMI lecturers who previously participated in the Training of Trainers (TOT) for Farmer Field School Facilitators under the Sustainable Pesticide Management Framework (SPMF) Program. It reflects how knowledge gained through the TOT is being cascaded to the next generation of agricultural practitioners.

During the training, students were introduced to the practical use of PUTS as a simple yet effective tool for analyzing soil nutrient conditions in paddy fields. This knowledge will equip them for future field practice as part of their community service activities, where they will provide soil analysis services directly to farmers. By helping farmers better understand the nutrient status of their paddy fields, students will support the delivery of more accurate fertilizer recommendations. This will enable farmers to apply fertilizers more efficiently, reduce unnecessary input costs, improve soil health, and ultimately increase rice productivity.

This initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between academia and field-based agricultural programs in preparing young agricultural professionals while contributing to more sustainable farming practices and stronger food security for Indonesia.

HarvestPlus Solutions and CropLife Indonesia had agreed to collaborate in implementing the Sustainable Pesticide Management Framework (SPMF) Program in Indonesia. As initial activity, the Training of Trainers (TOT) for Farmer Field School facilitators was held in Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra, Indonesia, to strengthen the capacity of facilitators to deliver practical, science-based solutions to farmers.

During the TOT, the participants engaged in hands-on practice of rice seed treatment, an essential step in sustainable rice cultivation. Seed treatment plays a crucial role in protecting seeds from pests and diseases at the earliest stage of growth. By applying the right treatment before planting, farmers can ensure better germination, healthier seedlings, and stronger crop establishment. This ultimately leads to higher yields and more efficient use of inputs.

Through this practical learning session, facilitators are equipped with the knowledge and skills to guide farmers toward adopting improved agricultural practices—contributing to increased productivity, reduced costs, and enhanced resilience.

Empowering farmers with such knowledge is a key step toward achieving food security and building a future where farmers are more prosperous and livelihoods are more sustainable.

As part of the Training of Trainers (TOT) for Farmer Field School (FFS) Facilitators, which was the collaboration between HarvestPlus Solutions and CropLife Indonesia to implement the Sustainable Pesticide Management Framework (SPMF) Program in Indonesia, a hands-on session on seed selection practices was conducted. This practical session emphasized the importance of selecting high-quality seeds as a fundamental step in rice cultivation. Participants were actively engaged in identifying and separating healthy, viable seeds from poor-quality ones using simple and effective techniques that can be easily applied at the farmer level.

Proper seed selection plays a crucial role in improving crop performance. By using high-quality seeds, farmers can achieve more uniform plant growth, stronger resistance to pests and diseases, and better adaptation to field conditions. Ultimately, this leads to higher productivity, improved grain quality, and increased harvest yields.

Through this TOT program, facilitators are equipped not only with technical knowledge but also with practical skills to guide farmers in adopting good agricultural practices, contributing to more sustainable and efficient rice production systems in Indonesia.

Understanding soil is the first step toward sustainable rice farming 🌱

As part of the Training of Trainers (TOT) for Field School Facilitators, a colaboration between HarvestPlus Solutions and CropLife Indonesia in the Sustainable Pesticide Management Framework (SPMF) Program, participants engaged in hands-on practice using the Paddy Soil Test Kit (PUTS). This practical session is essential to equip facilitators with the skills needed to guide farmers in making informed decisions before planting.

PUTS helps identify the nutrient content in paddy soils, enabling farmers to apply fertilizers more precisely and avoid overuse. By matching fertilizer application with actual soil needs, farmers can significantly reduce production costs while improving crop productivity and achieving better yields.

This approach not only supports more efficient farming practices but also promotes sustainable agriculture and responsible nutrient management for long-term soil health.

Empowering facilitators today means empowering farmers for a more productive and sustainable tomorrow 🌾
