The Children of Sumatra

The Children of Sumatra We are a grassroots charity based in Sumatra for the last 24 years. In Indonesia this is not the case although the condition affects 1 in 500 children.

We are currently raising funds for the North Sumatra flood disaster.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Donate here: https://childrenofsumatra.org/donate/ The Children of Sumatra was set up 23 years ago with the aim of helping children suffering from cleft lip and palate living on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. Many families there live below the poverty line which prevents them from the ability to pay for a simple operation th

at can transform their childโ€™s future. In Europe and the Americas, we are almost unaware of this condition as it is corrected within the first year of a childโ€™s life. The high prevalence of cleft and palate deformities can be traced back to malnutrition during pregnancy, the use of pesticides in farming communities, genetic predisposition among other causes. Our charity is not only sponsoring surgeries and the after care of cleft and palate deformities, but is working tirelessly on raising awareness within rural areas on the mitigation and avoidance of cleft related deformities. We also sponsor other community-based aid projects for families in need. For more information about our grassroot charity visit our website and follow us on Social Media for regular fundraising updates.

The affected area now covers a region larger than that affected by the 2004 tsunami. More than 3.2 million people have been impacted, and over a million have been displaced from their homes. Sumatra is in urgent need of help.

Thanks to your generous donations, and with the support of our local partners, we are now providing emergency aid in five affected areas. Multiple teams are on the ground, travelling into these regions to deliver food, clean water and essential supplies.

Thanks to all the amazing people joining together, risking their own lives to save others. Suster Fcjm Harapan Jaya Siantar Ali Pavett and friends in Pulau Weh Sahorman Damanik Ishkak Katambe and many others โ™ฅ๏ธ

This disaster is just starting to unfold. There are thousands of families living in remote villages, that are yet to be contacted. While other villages are completely under mud, some completely washed away. ๐Ÿฅฒ

Our friends in Aceh, have distributed some of the supplies to affected villages near the Gayo border. In the next coming days, hopefully they will be able to access some of the cut-off areas of Gayo Lues Regency, with a population of over 100,000 people. Your donations are the only thing that makes this possible.

Sumatra is in crisis, and we canโ€™t do this without your help. Please share this message widely and donate via the link in comments โ€“ every donation will make a huge difference.

Death toll in Sumatra has now passed 900 people and is rising every day. Hundreds of people are still missing, and cut-off communities are running out of food and clean water.

Our friends in Sumatra have begun distributing supplies and are cutting paths through the jungle to reach isolated villages in Gayo Lues Regency; this part of Aceh is completely cut-off.

Tomorrow, Harapan Jaya and our team will head into the areas surrounding Sibolga with more emergency aid.

Sumatra urgently needs your help. Please donate โ€“ however small โ€“ and share this post so others see what is happening.

Sumatra is facing a major humanitarian emergency.

Cyclone, earthquake and days of constant rain have brought severe flooding across the north, west and south of the island. Major bridges have been destroyed, roads are cut off, and many areas have very limited communication. Food and supplies in these cut-off areas, will run out in a matter of days.

More than 300 people are confirmed dead and hundreds are still missing. The death toll is still rising.

Our friends and partners, including Harapan Jaya, are already on the ground. Their vans are being stocked full of food and supplies and sent into affected areas. Our charity has already sent funds for a generator and food in remote communities, but the needs are huge and growing every day.

This disaster has also hit many of the children who received surgery with our help โ€“ and the homes they had only just returned to. So many families have lost everything.
This is a desperate situation. Urgent help is needed to overcome this humanitarian crisis.
Please donate โ€“ however small โ€“ and share this post so the world pays attention.

Nine-year-old Natanael travelled 20 hours by bus from his remote village in North Sumatra to recieve this life-changing operation.

Today, he can begin a life free from teasing and bullying.
No child should have to spend nine years living with a cleft. ๐Ÿ’š

Your support helps us reach more children like Natanael. If you would like to donate the link is in the comments / Bio.

Did you know that Indonesia has one of the highest rates of cleft lip and palate in the world. For many families, something that can be corrected with a simple surgery becomes a life long struggle affecting their eating, speaking, confidence, and the way the world sees them.
The operations are underway, and every bit of support counts. Your help can change a child's future. Support details are shared in the comments. ๐Ÿฅฐ
