We were established in 1998 and became the oldest university club in Faculty of Engineering. In 2016, SPE UI SC will generate breakthroughs and improvements by bringing 3 moral values as our orientation – Competence, Integration, and Loyalty.

[Green Hydrogen in Midstream Infrastructure: Re-purposing Oil and Gas Pipelines for a Zero-Emission Future]
Everyone talks about hydrogen like it’s the answer. Fewer people talk about why it’s still stuck at pilot scale.
🌍 77% of global emissions now sit under net-zero targets. Sounds promising, right ? Until you find out 63% of those targets are built on weak, half-finished design. The energy and logistics sectors keep getting flagged as the biggest gap, mostly because there’s still no clean fuel that scales the way fossil fuels do.
Hydrogen checks the boxes on paper: flexible, abundant, clean-burning. So what’s holding it back?
🔧 Not production. Distribution. Hydrogen behaves nothing like natural gas once it’s inside a pipe: different pressure demands, different material risks. Building a dedicated hydrogen network from scratch means new pipelines, new compressors, new safety systems, and years most countries don’t have.
So instead of starting from zero, some experts are looking at what’s already underground.
⚙️ Existing gas pipelines, depending on their condition, can be assessed, upgraded, and in some cases converted to carry hydrogen, either blended in or fully replacing the gas they were built for. It’s estimated to cost 30–60% less than building new hydrogen infrastructure outright.
🇮🇩 Indonesia already has 33,000+ km of gas pipeline across 18 provinces, covering over 90% of downstream infrastructure, but no public pilot has touched blending or conversion yet. The opportunity is sitting right there, unclaimed.
