On this International Day of Families, the Bahá’í International Community reflects on the role of the family in contributing to the betterment of society.

The family is where we first learn qualities such as justice, compassion, cooperation, and mutual support. As these qualities are nurtured within families, they extend outward into neighbourhoods, communities, and society as a whole.

This vision resonates with the Bandar Seri Begawan Declaration adopted by Member States, which stresses the importance of strengthening family–community partnerships and promoting the role of families in fostering greater unity, solidarity, and resilient communities.

As we reflect on the role of family in society, may we consider how the family unit can become a source of unity, participation, and collective well-being.

The Bahá’í International Community (BIC), Jakarta Office is delighted to join the 70th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations with the priority theme focused on ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls. Aside of attending variety of events, we were honored to speak at a session organized by NGO CSW/NY Working Group on Peace & Gender Equality on “Mobilizing and Advocating for Peace: Women and Girls as Part of the Solution” and a session organized by the Tzu Chi Foundation on “Invisible Voices: Female Migrant Domestic Workers (FMDW) & Girls Left Behind”. Through these opportunities, the Office tries to offer insights generated by the grassroot experience from Southeast Asia.

The commission has been a great space to collectively assess the concept of justice in different social settings–from the family to the workplace, in institutions and in international cooperation.

Statement of the BIC to the 70th Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women stated “A social order that is built on justice—in policy and legislation, in culture and practice—is one that ultimately benefits everyone of its members, men as well as women, boys as well as girls.”

As diverse actors such as governments, civil society, youth, faith communities, and indigenous communities work to address shared challenges, what conditions will enable these efforts to move beyond parallel action toward more coherent and coordinated contributions to the common good?

What conditions enable meaningful youth participation to flourish?

In December 2025, the Baha’i International Community Jakarta Office hosted a hybrid regional consultative space in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore on envisioning the roadmap for meaningful youth participation in Southeast Asia.

As we move forward, how can we build collective awareness of peace and security that moves beyond the absence of war and violence to truly reflect the lived realities and aspirations of the youth?

As a youthful region, Southeast Asia holds remarkable potential not only for its own progress but also for the world.

In December 2025, the Baha’i International Community Jakarta Office hosted a hybrid regional consultative space in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore on envisioning the roadmap for meaningful youth participation in Southeast Asia.

If we truly wish to tap on youth’s energy in devising solutions to humanity’s most pressing challenges-economic inequality, polarization, conflict and disunity, environmental degradation, ethical use of digital technologies, health and climate change, we need to collectively rethink the perspectives associated with the period of youth.

This commitment has led us to participate in discussions on important topics, such as the role of youth as agents of constructive social change, the role of faith in creating a unifying vision essential for social cohesion, promoting gender equality and sustainable development, and the role of education in fostering values that are conducive to intergenerational collaboration and solidarity.
