ICOMOS Indonesia is pleased to announce an upcoming webinar titled “Sugar Industrial Heritage.” This engaging discussion aims to enhance awareness of the historical, social, and technological importance of the sugar industry as a significant cultural heritage asset. The event is scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2025, at 3:00 PM WIB.

The webinar will feature two esteemed speakers. Albert Giesellert, an expert in industrial heritage from Germany, will provide insights into the evolution of sugar production, the critical need for the preservation of industrial sites, and exemplary global practices in revitalizing former sugar complexes for cultural and educational purposes. And, Putu Dananjaya, a cultural heritage specialist from Balai Pelestarian Kebudayaan X, will address the Indonesian context by examining the legacy of the sugar industry throughout the archipelago, its impact on local communities, and ongoing conservation and adaptive reuse initiatives.

The discussion will be moderated by R. Yudha Irawan, S.Ars., MBA, a professional in architecture representing ICOMOS Indonesia. Participants will have the opportunity to explore how sugar industrial heritage can be preserved, reinterpreted, and integrated into contemporary cultural identity and development strategies.

This webinar is open to researchers, heritage practitioners, students, and individuals interested in industrial history and heritage conservation. A fruitful exchange of knowledge and perspectives is anticipated.
