OPEN LETTER
To the Government of the Republic of Haiti
With special attention to the Haitian Consulate in The Bahamas
We, members of the Haitian community living in The Bahamas, speak out today with deep pain, but also with dignity and responsibility, to denounce the serious, humiliating, and inhumane conditions we endure on a daily basis.
For far too long, Haitian nationals have been subjected to systematic abuse and discrimination: arbitrary arrests, violations of fundamental human rights, and unfounded accusations for social and criminal issues occurring in the host country. We are often treated worse than animals, publicly humiliated, and portrayed as criminals without due process, without legal protection, and without respect for human dignity.
We remind the Haitian State that wherever we may reside, we remain Haitian citizens. It is the moral, political, and legal responsibility of the State to defend our rights, raise its voice on our behalf, and demand that Bahamian authorities treat us in accordance with international human rights conventions.
Therefore, we firmly call for:
1. The Haitian Consulate in The Bahamas to break its silence and act courageously in defense of the Haitian community.
2. The Haitian Government to urgently engage in dialogue with Bahamian authorities regarding the mistreatment of Haitian nationals.
3. The immediate establishment of emergency measures to facilitate the voluntary, safe, and dignified return of Haitians who wish to return home.
4. The provision of legal, social, and humanitarian assistance to Haitian citizens who are victims of abuse and discrimination.
We are not asking for privileges. We are demanding respect. We did not leave our country by choice, but as a result of a profound national crisis. Today, even abroad, we feel abandoned, unprotected, and voiceless.
The silence of the Haitian State amounts to a form of complicity. History will judge how a nation protects its citizens, wherever they may be.
The dignity of the Haitian people is non-negotiable.
On behalf of the Haitian community living in The Bahamas,
Sony Marc
Haitian citizen
The Bahamas
