On Monday we consulted back with the little boy who drowned a few days earlier. His neuro was good as well as lungs and he is doing fine! Please praise God for this answer to prayer.

Church was cancelled this morning for a young man in respiratory distress. He has a history of alcoholism which is harming his liver. He did better in February but then failed to return or stay on his medications. He also has congestive heart failure and an irregular rapid heart rate. We have given IV meds to slow the heart and improve circulation as well as remove fluid. We are sending him by private motorcycle to St. Boniface where we hope they will help him to recover sufficiently to return to better health. Please pray for Andre to live, to seek the Lord's help to overcome addiction to alcohol and smoking, to find peace that surpasses understanding so he will not need these damaging substances. He states he is a believer, but life in Haiti is very difficult. Thank you for praying for Andre.

Yesterday we had a special answer to prayer - your prayers! On May 14 an 11 year old boy came in having seizures. He was slightly swollen for a week prior. On exam his blood pressure was very high which led to checking his urine. It was very dark and had excess protein and lots of blood in it. This indicated kidney damage and we supposed was a result of a strep infection earlier. For some reason, the human body forms antibodies against strep that can attack normal human tissue in kidneys or hearts. Very high blood pressure decreases the blood flow to the brain and causes swelling which increases pressure which causes seizures. Shouby never regained normal consciousness while at our clinic. We gave meds not only to stop the seizures (which were not completely effective) but also to decrease pressure in his brain. We gave anti hypertension meds as well via IV. We sent him by motorcycle late in the day to St Boniface hospital where they kept him for 10 days before sending him home. Yesterday he came to the clinic and had a completely normal neurological exam, normal blood pressure, and only a trace of blood in his urine.
YOU PRAYED... AND GOD ANSWERED!
This gives me hope for the 3 year old who drowned on Wednesday. Thank you so much for praying while we are busy working. God hears your prayers!

Miss Feda is giving a vitamin A dose to a child less than 5. This prevents blindness and diminished vision. This program also provides worm medicine a few times a year. It is one of the items in our Vitamin Angels program we received recently. It is a free program except for the expensive transport from Port au Prince.

PRAYERS: Badeletson is a 3 year old boy who was brought in around noon after he was found upside down in a basin of cold water. The man who brought him went to find the mother. The child's heart was beating while shallow breathing on arrival with low oxygen until we did some chest compression to expel water and put more oxygen on him. He has fluid in the lungs, oxygen improved. He was unconscious but became agitated and was having signs of swelling of the brain. We gave him some medicine IV to help decrease that. He is on his way to the hospital on a motorcycle taxi. Please pray that the swelling in his brain will decrease and he will wake up without brain damage. Thanks!

PRAYERS QUICKLY: A young child (3-4?) was brought in that was found upside down in a basin of cold water. The man who brought him does not know the name but knows the mother and he went to look for her. The child's heart was beating, and breathing on arrival. He has fluid in the lungs, oxygen is OK on oxygen. He is unconscious but starting to get active and loud. PRAYERS TO FIND MOM. PRAYERS FOR THE CHILD TO WAKE UP WITHOUT BRAIN DAMAGE. Thanks!

After gardening and making mango juice this morning we went to the store to pick up some items we need prior to a trip to the US. I got for large cans of formula for a baby. We normally do not do formula at all and encourage breast milk minimum 1 year and if possible 2 years since our clients are often poor and many cannot afford milk or formula. This mama adopted an unwanted baby likely because it was sick (and because she had no child). First visit to the clinic baby tested positive for HIV and syphilus. Both of these can be acquired from birth mom. We did a special test and it showed the baby had a true case of syphilus which is quite serious in newborns so hospitalization was necessary. She went to the charity hospital for a couple a week or 2 and baby looked better on return. The baby is nearly 6 months old now and is generally healthy, testing negative twice now for HIV. Whenever possible I pick up formula for them and today I found the large cans for $21 apiece and got 4 - $84. I was shocked but looked on Amazon and this is a pretty good price. This 900 G can will last 10-12 days. Our poor fund will cover the cost and help as much as possible. Breast feeding is essential in poor resource countries. We are glad we can help out in this instance. Most families here cannot afford this expense and how convenient that God provides free milk which is specially formulated for each baby from their mom after birth. This is one reason for so much malnutrition in Haiti as mothers do not provide breast milk for 1 reason or another (usually poor advice from relatives or friends). As a result only 40% sustain breast feeding exclusively for 6 months. Diarrhea is a major risk when not breastfeeding. About 10% of children born in Haiti die prior to their 5th birthday.
At this point HHM does not have a malnutrition program. We used to have a nurse practitioner who instituted one, but after her departure, we simply did not have the capacity to continue. There are very few programs available and the main one in our area will not provide formula prior to 6 months of age.
During prenatal care at HHM all mothers are taught the importance of breastfeeding. On the first clinic visit for newborns they and their mom have training on breastfeeding and more encouragement to exclusively breast feed for 6 months and continue for a minimum of 1 year.
