This week as our team worked toward the reunification of a former street child with his family, we met not only with his family - but also with community leaders in the family’s neighbourhood.

Engaging community leaders and neighbours by ensuring they understand the importance of children growing up in their families, and the role they can play in supporting each child’s reintegration into the community, can be powerful in ensuring the reunification is successful long-term.

Sometimes, this is what visiting a family for follow-up looks like: hiking through paths that can only be reached by foot or horse! Our team has waded through rivers, hiked up mountains, and crossed questionable bridges to locate, visit and follow-up with vulnerable families. The perseverance and dedication of our team is part of what makes family tracing, mediation and reunification so successful!

This week, our team as seen here was visiting families in Haiti’s Southern Coast to collect the upcoming school year list for students, to provide family mediation, to evaluate and coach families for business start-up support, and to do medical evaluations.

Follow-up support is critical to ensuring parents are empowered and children can thrive in their families. Thank you for helping make this possible, and thank you to our team for their perseverance!

Last week, our social workers participated in a week-long training on case management that was coordinated by Haitian Social Services (IBESR).

Little Footprints is an active member of Haiti’s Regional Working Group for Child Protection (GTPE) in three different departments across the country! These child protection clusters are coordinated by Haitian Social Services and include both local and international organizations as well as local authorities that are involved in child protection. In addition to monthly meetings, these networks collaborate to facilitate community trainings, conduct focus groups and advocacy, reinforce internal competencies, develop policies and guides for best practice, and ensure a coordinated response to child protection issues.

It is deeply important that international organizations ensure their interventions are in line with the priorities identified by, and legal methodologies of, local protection authorities. When this does not happen, they can unintentionally undermine efforts intended to protect children (the orphanage system is a prime example of this).

We are also thrilled to reinforce the capacity of local authorities by supporting initiatives undertaken as part of this network.

Today Little Footprints Big Steps’ Executive Director Morgan Wienberg participated in a round table discussion on Canada’s Foreign Policy and International Development with Canada’s Secretary of State for International Development, Randeep Sarai. She highlighted the following recommendations for consideration in Canada’s development cooperation priorities and approaches going forward, including in the context of the advancement of a new Canadian foreign policy:

1) Become a human rights champion: ensure child protection policies are in place for interventions across all sectors involving children directly or indirectly; ensure framework is in place to allow accountability for human rights violations. Support the reinforcement of local justice systems.

2) Solidarity, not aid: focus on supporting peace restoration and sustainable poverty reduction/ economic development to invest sustainably in other countries so that they can become partners in trade and experience increased stability beyond support provided. Ensure that community-based local champions are involved in the identification of issues, elaboration of solutions, and implementation of interventions.

3) Prioritization of child protection and wellbeing with a family-based care lens: Prioritize child protection and wellbeing with a focus on family-based care, family strengthening and community development (avoid investment in institutionalization of children, which can exacerbate child rights violations).

Haiti was specifically mentioned multiple times, both by Morgan and other participants.

At our Rhythms of Haiti event last week, we took a moment to acknowledge the irreplaceable contributions of Karen Wienberg to Little Footprints’ development, growth and impact over the past 15 years. Not only is she Morgan Wienberg’s mother and biggest supporter, but Karen has also been a critical member of Little Footprints’ foundation, Board, fundraising committee, outreach and Canadian representation over the years. Without Karen’s dedication and heartfelt contributions, Little Footprints would not be where it is today.

The Little Footprints team in Haiti shared a video thanking Karen, which was also played during Rhythms of Haiti as special recognition for the sacrifices and passion Karen’s years of volunteering and unwavering support have demonstrated. On behalf of all those positively impacted by LFBS, thank you Karen!

Wow! Rhythms of Haiti was an incredible success, and it meant so much to celebrate Haitian culture and 15 years of Little Footprints Big Steps with the Yukon community!

Thank you so much to each of you who came and participated, who volunteered, who helped spread the word, who donated and who supported in other ways. It was a beautiful community event and demonstration of the very solidarity we came together to celebrate!
