The main goals of the Symposium are to gain experience in presenting scientific results, exchange knowledge and ideas, popularize science and develop young scientists in the STEM field. From PhD students to PhD students.

The PhD Student Symposium is attended by doctoral students from all over Croatia and other countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and the Czech Republic. Ever

y year the Symposium gathers more than 190 active and passive participants. The first Symposium was held in 2016 on the occasion of two significant jubilees, 140 years of organized scientific and teaching work in science and mathematics at the University of Zagreb, and 70 years at the Faculty of Science. The Symposium is a two-day event, where PhD students of the Faculty of Science and related studies present their scientific research to colleagues, mentors and teachers of doctoral studies, as well as scientists from related faculties and institutes, in the form of oral and poster presentations. During the Symposium, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in various workshops addressing the challenges faced by every young scientist and meet the Symposium sponsors and possible future employers. As if all this were not enticing enough, the Symposium traditionally offers a rich entertainment program with plenty of drinks and food. And, of course, the opportunity to meet with other symposium participants.

This year PhDSS is collecting materials for Dječji dom Laduč, that acts as a part of Centar za djecu Zagreb.

Podružnica Laduč is providing social services to children in need, in the age group from 7 to 18. For more information, visit https://www.centarzadjecuzagreb.hr/ and https://www.centarzadjecuzagreb.hr/laduc/.

We are encouraging you to contribute to the Podružnica Laduč by donating hygienic products, as well as seasonal protection products (like sunscreens, bug repelents or similar), that we will be collecting at the symposium venue.

We are excited to welcome Vanja Wagner, Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb, and a member of the Probability Theory and Statistics Group.

Her research lies at the intersection of probability theory and analysis, with a focus on jump processes, nonlocal operators, and probabilistic potential theory. Her work combines analytic and probabilistic approaches to study nonlocal phenomena.

What is science, how does it work, and why do we need it?

In a world shaped by scientific discoveries, we rarely stop to ask what science actually is.

From its beginnings as “natural philosophy” to today’s highly specialized disciplines, science has always followed the same fundamental idea: understanding the world through a rational, shared method. Yet, while we learn scientific facts, we often overlook the rules behind them.

Why does that matter? Because without understanding how science works, it becomes difficult to distinguish real scientific knowledge from claims that only appear to be scientific.
