Yesterday we cleaned the beaches of Plavnik Island near Krk. 🌊♻️
Around forty volunteers took part in the action – students from the International English School in Padua. We departed from Punat by boat around 10 a.m., and upon arriving at Plavnik we spread out across several beaches with one important mission: collecting plastic and other waste.
What was particularly interesting, but also concerning, is that we revisited beaches that had already been cleaned just over a month ago – and there was waste there again. It is an important reminder to all visitors of the coast: the sea constantly brings in new debris, and the larger waste we notice immediately is relatively easy to remove. The biggest problem is the tiny fragments of degraded plastic that become trapped among rocks, branches, and seaweed.
That is exactly the kind of waste we focused on yesterday – patiently and carefully sorting through pebbles and algae in order to remove as much of what we can already call microplastics as possible.
A big thank you to all volunteers for their effort, patience, and for collecting several bags of waste! 💙
After demanding work under the blazing sun, we enjoyed a well-deserved lunch in the shade of the holm oak trees, followed by a swim at the beautiful Golden Beach. ☀️🏝️
