He spent five months in detention for a crime he always maintained he didn't commit.

His story reflects a reality many people don't see: around the world, countless children and adolescents are held in detention without ever being convicted of a crime. They are simply waiting for their cases to move through the justice system.

"When can you bring my family?"
It's one of the questions we hear most often from young people in detention centers.

They seek out our team and ask again and again when they will be able to see their moms, dads, siblings, and loved ones. Because no matter where they are, they still need their family's love, support, and presence.

And that's when we get to work.
Thanks to our donors, we can help make these reunions possible. Sometimes it means coordinating journeys of more than 13 hours to reach a facility. But when we see that hug, that smile, and the joy of being reunited after months apart, we know every effort was worth it.

These moments remind young people that they are not alone. That they are still loved. That people are waiting for them, believing in them, and walking alongside them through one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Nothing makes us happier than hearing a young person say, "Thank you for bringing my family."

🌎 A new regional effort to strengthen juvenile justice is underway.

This month, four institutions from Bolivia, Honduras, Mexico, and Uruguay began implementing the Alternatives to Detention Toolkit with technical support from JJAI. Together, they are working to reduce the unnecessary use of detention and strengthen more effective responses for youth in conflict with the law.

Martha had participated in a visit before. And when another opportunity came to see her grandson, she didn't hesitate. She made the arrangements and began the journey.

Only family can truly understand what that hug means. The relief of seeing him. Of knowing he is okay. Of being able to tell him how much he is loved, encourage him, and be by his side, even if only for a few hours.

Because hope for a better future for young people also lives in their families—families who never stop believing in them.

We are grateful to have shared this day with Martha and her grandson.

In juvenile justice systems, deprivation of liberty should be used only as an exceptional measure. But turning this principle into reality requires more than a strong legal framework.

It also requires systems capable of implementing effective community-based measures, providing appropriate support to adolescents, and responding proportionately to the challenges that arise during implementation.

Through Component III of the Advanced Training on the Alternatives to Detention Toolkit, you will gain practical tools to strengthen community supervision, develop individualized plans, and promote evidence-based social reintegration processes.

The implementation of community-based measures requires the right tools, specialized knowledge, and evidence-based decision-making.

For this reason, the Convention on the Rights of the Child establishes that deprivation of liberty should be used only as a measure of last resort and that justice systems should develop appropriate community-based responses whenever possible.
