Who we are
RMP began in 2005 as a grassroots effort by a concerned group of individuals in the West End dive community who decided to take action to protect Roatan’s reefs and ecosystems. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of Roatan’s protected marine and coastal area including all of its flora, fauna, physical and biological characteristics and phenomena, and historical

and cultural resources. Our efforts are accomplished through our broad range of programs and resources, none of which would be possible without the support of our local community, partners, and donors. Where We Work
RMP operates within Roatan’s marine protected area, one of three islands' MPAs which make up the 650,000 hectare Bay Islands National Marine Park. The national park safeguards a significant portion of the Mesoamerican Reef System, an ecosystem that is extremely vulnerable to climate change and terrestrial pollution. All of our organization’s efforts are directed at protecting and preserving the increasingly fragile marine ecosystems around Roatan due to sharp increases in the island’s population and tourism in recent years. How We Work
The RMP has adopted the strategy of protecting the reef by taking pressure off the reef. By providing the community with sustainable alternatives to behaviors that are harmful to nature, we can create a lasting sense of environmental responsibility on Roatan. Our work revolves around six key programs and generally falls into three pillars: facilitating environmental protection, empowering our community, and promoting environmental responsibility. We believe the successful implementation of these three pillars will have a real impact on improving the health and sustainability of every living thing in our ecosystem, as well as ourselves. Why it Matters
The marine and coastal environments in the Bay Islands have always shaped the lives, culture, and history of its people and will continue to do so. The island’s ecosystems and resources are not luxuries of nature, they are necessities to sustain any healthy and thriving community within the Bay Islands. Roatan’s rapidly growing population both directly and indirectly depends on the ocean, both for its economic resources that drive the fishing, agriculture, and tourism industries on the island and the sense of identity it brings to the people of Roatan. RMP believes together, in partnership with individuals, communities, businesses, foundations, and governments we can keep our oceans clean, our coral vibrant, and our community healthy.

Our Game Changers Club girls just wrapped up an incredible two-week journey into the world of mangroves, and it was nothing short of amazing.

They started in the classroom, learning to identify Roatan's four mangrove species and what makes each one unique. The clear fan favorite? Black mangroves, with their roots that grow upward like tiny snorkels, allowing the trees to breathe in waterlogged soil. Nature truly doesn't stop surprising us!

Week two took things to the next level: a boat tour through the mangroves themselves. The girls got to see crabs, lobsters, octopuses, stingrays, fish, and birds, all thriving in ecosystems that mangroves help protect. Seeing it first hand made every lesson click.

Beyond biodiversity, our girls now understand just how vital mangroves are for island communities like ours, stabilizing shorelines, improving water quality, and acting as a natural shield against storms.
A huge thank you to OakHill Foundation for making experiences like this possible. These are the kinds of lessons that stay with you for life.💚

Las niñas de nuestro Game Changers Club acaban de completar dos semanas increíbles explorando el mundo de los manglares, ¡y fue una experiencia verdaderamente especial!

Todo comenzó en el aula, donde aprendieron a identificar las cuatro especies de manglares presentes en Roatán y lo que hace única a cada una. ¿La favorita del grupo? Los manglares negros, con sus raíces que crecen hacia arriba como pequeños snórkeles, permitiéndoles respirar en suelos inundados. ¡La naturaleza nunca deja de sorprendernos!

La segunda semana llevó todo a otro nivel: un recorrido en bote entre los manglares. Las niñas pudieron observar cangrejos, langostas, pulpos, rayas, peces y aves, todos conviviendo en los ecosistemas que los manglares protegen. Verlo con sus propios ojos hizo que cada lección cobrara vida.

Más allá de la biodiversidad, nuestras niñas comprenden ahora lo vitales que son los manglares para comunidades isleñas como la nuestra, estabilizando las costas, mejorando la calidad del agua y funcionando como una barrera natural ante tormentas.
Un enorme agradecimiento a OakHill Foundation por hacer posibles experiencias como esta. 💚 Este es el tipo de aprendizaje que se lleva para toda la vida.

Partnership in action! 🪸✨

A few days ago, we welcomed the team from Roatan Divers to our facilities for an inside look at what we do, from our daily conservation programs to our role as co-managers of Bay Islands National Marine Park.

The highlight? A guided tour of our Coral Restoration Center (CRCR) lab. The team got a deep dive into how coral gametes are collected and carefully handled.

But this wasn’t just a theory lesson. Today, Roatan Divers will be diving right alongside us, supporting our in-water collection activities this season! Understanding the full science behind the spawning process ensures our teams are perfectly synced up for the big days ahead.

A major win for our reefs!
After three days of intense monitoring, our Grooved Brain corals had a massive spawning event last night!

What happened next? 🧬 We carefully transported the gametes to our Coral Reproduction Center (CRCR) to begin assisted reproduction.

This mission takes a village. Endless gratitude to Roatan Divers for the dive support, the California Academy of Sciences(CAS) for the brilliant field collaboration and Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform for backing our vision. 🙏

On this World Sea Turtle Day, let's dive deeper to meet the Hawksbill Sea Turtle, the reef's most devoted gardener.

With a narrow, pointed beak shaped like a hawk's bill and a stunning amber and brown shell, this turtle has been sculpted by millions of years of evolution for one purpose: to keep coral reefs alive. Ancient design, critical mission.

The Hawksbill favors healthy coral ecosystems, threading its beak into cracks and crevices no other species can reach, hunting the sponges that would otherwise crowd out coral. Every dive it takes, every sponge it eats, is an act of reef maintenance. The Hawksbill has been doing this work long before we arrived.

But we cannot let its grace distract us; the Hawksbill is now on the brink of disappearing forever. Every day, these turtles mistake deadly plastic for food, and each damaged reef costs them both shelter and survival. Though they endure for decades and cross entire oceans to return home, without urgent action now, their resilience will not save them.

At Roatan Marine Park, time is running out to protect the Hawksbill. Our Marine Patrols must act swiftly to shield these turtles and their habitats from escalating illegal activities. Remaining vigilant is more critical than ever to safeguard this vital species and the future of our reef.

En este Día Mundial de la Tortuga Marina, sumerjámonos más profundo para conocer a la Tortuga de Carey, la jardinera más dedicada del arrecife.

Con un pico estrecho y puntiagudo con forma de halcón y un impresionante caparazón de tonos ámbar y marrón, esta tortuga ha sido moldeada por millones de años de evolución con un solo propósito: mantener vivos los arrecifes de coral. Diseño ancestral, misión crítica.

La Tortuga de Carey prefiere los ecosistemas coralinos saludables, introduciendo su pico en grietas y hendiduras a las que ninguna otra especie puede llegar, cazando las esponjas que de otro modo desplazarían al coral. Cada inmersión que realiza, cada esponja que consume, es un acto de mantenimiento del arrecife. La Tortuga de Carey lleva haciendo este trabajo mucho antes de que nosotros llegáramos.

Pero no podemos dejar que su elegancia nos distraiga; la Tortuga de Carey está hoy al borde de desaparecer para siempre. Cada día, estas tortugas confunden el plástico mortal con alimento, y cada arrecife dañado les cuesta tanto su refugio como su supervivencia. Aunque sobreviven durante décadas y cruzan océanos enteros para regresar a casa, sin una acción urgente ahora, su resiliencia no bastará para salvarlas.

En el Roatan Marine Park, el tiempo se agota para proteger a la Tortuga de Carey. Nuestras Patrullas Marinas deben actuar con rapidez para resguardar a estas tortugas y sus hábitats de las crecientes actividades ilegales. Mantenerse vigilantes es más crucial que nunca para salvaguardar esta especie vital y el futuro de nuestro arrecife.
