“Condemnation of Hong Kong Police’s Unreasonable Actions and Statement of Indefinite Strike”
On 12th November, 2019, the Hong Kong Police Force has entered into several universities without sounding evidence, harmed and arrested university students.
Students being seen in the university campus is a natural phenomenon. This should never be regarded as an act of illegal assembly or rioting. According to the Police General Order, Chapter 44-04(2), “a police officer shall not enter any premises without consent of owners, occupiers, or their representatives”. Without the consent or a search warrant, the Hong Kong police entering universities’ premises can be seen as illegal entry. The unreasonable entry into private premises of universities; numerous shots of tear gas, bean bag rounds and rubber bullets, cast doubt on whether the Hong Kong police was intentionally harming university students to vent their hatred in their own desire.
Up to now, a large number of students from The Chinese University of Hong Kong were affected by tear gas and have displayed symptoms of discomfort. Students were shot and injured by the Hong Kong police with both rubber bullets and bean bag rounds. In within, students whose eyes were being shot could potentially lead to permanent damage to their eyesight. The assault and attempt to murder shown by the police have enraged the students of HKUST; hence we strongly condemn the Hong Kong police for their actions of unreasonable arrest of students and brutality inflicted on them. We thereby urge the Hong Kong Police Force to retreat from the premises of all tertiary institutions.
Hong Kong Police’s intrusion into any one of the university is not acceptable at all, given the purpose of universities is for education. The unreasonable acts displayed by the Hong Kong Police raised the question of whether it is safe and viable for students to pursue their studies inside the institutions. Therefore, societies hereby announced our indefinite strike until the following demands are met:
1) Hong Kong Police retreat from premises of all tertiary institutions, and promise to never enter any institution without proper search warrants or consent of owners or occupiers
2) Release students under unlawful arrest
3) Hong Kong Police justify their operation, and apologise to the injured students
4) Clarify whether acts including attending lessons, staying in students hostels, using facilities in the institutes are illegal, whether being on campus is still safe
In light of being in the campus might have already offend or violate any police-proposed laws; we also urge our members, HKUST students and all Hong Kong students not to take any risk to attend lessons if safety is not guaranteed.
We hope the President of HKUST, Wei Shyy, as well as the Presidents and Chairmen of Councils from other tertiary institutions would publicly condemn the violent acts of Hong Kong Police towards students; promise to protect the safety of all students; and to forbid any intrusion of Hong Kong Police into institutes without reasonable explanation.
This is a critical moment that determines our future. Hong Kong people must bind our hands together to fight against the tyranny and stop the brutality.
