According to the information from the Environmental Protection Department (EPD), the amount of the waste glass bottles disposed of at landfills has been on average at around 250 tons per day in the past 10 years. It also accounts for about 3 % of daily volume of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal. Glass is a kind of inert material and will not release harmful material to the environment on disposal. However, glass can be hardly decomposed. Disposal of glass bottles in dwindling landfill will consume the limited space of landfills and is also a waste of the natural, valuable resource. The youth organization, 2Gather, believe that it is important for the public to change the conventional thought that “glass bottles are waste”. This conceptual change would alter the habitual behaviour of throwing away used glass bottles at the rubbish bins. Instead, it is crucial to note that used glass bottles can be recycled for useful construction materials. This change in perception and behaviour would effectively reduce the level of pollution caused by disposal of glass bottles and alleviate the burden of landfills. In 2013, with the funding under the Environment and Conservative Fund (ECF) operated by EPD, we have launched a new project namely “Glass Recycling for a Greener Tomorrow” for commencing from April 2013. It is our plan to promote glass recycling to the catering industry such as bars and restaurants as well as residential estates and buildings located at Central and Western District. We pay special attention to the regions of Lan Kwai Fong and Soho where bars and restaurants are concentrated. As of today, the total amount of participating bars and restaurants reaches 40. Every day, we arrange for collection and transportation of used glass bottles from different areas in Central and Western District to the warehouse of a local construction materials manufacturer. The manufacturer will accordingly process the used glass bottles to make and produce eco-pavers. This would in turn lower the burden of landfills and promote sustainable development of the community as a whole. Educating the public also plays a significant role in the success of the whole project. Our public education program covers lowering waste disposal, sorting at disposal and recycling of materials. Therefore, whilst we continue to facilitate the glass bottles collection and recycling, we also place great emphasis on the promotion and publicity of environmental education. We have organized a variety of promotional events, including the recruitment of Green Ambassadors, educational talks on environmental protection and Green Workshops, with the hope that public awareness will be raised on the issues. Glass Recycling, it’s the right thing to do.
