We are a group of Year 1 students from the HKUST School of Business and Management, and we are currently doing an applied ethics service project to help street sleepers in Hong Kong. With the number of street sleepers recently increasing to about 1,400, it is an alarming issue that most businesses and individuals are unaware of. Moreover, with the recent incident of a homeless woman’s death at a f

ast food company, we feel that greater attention should be given to this socially disadvantaged and marginalized group. Through collaborating with the charity and humanitarian organization, Sunshine Action, we are holding street visits, presentations and fundraising activities. We hope to assist street sleepers in Hong Kong and raise awareness about this issue in the local business community.

On November 17th, Michelle visited Sham Shui Po with Sunshine Action 耀陽行動. We distributed dinner boxes, drinks and toiletries to the street sleepers. Once again, it can be seen that the floor of the park is all wet due to "floor washing".

"Floor washing" has been a common excuse used by parks in Hong Kong in order to drive away the street sleepers. The conditions of the street sleepers' final resort got worsen by this move of the government / garden keeper.

We hope that through our campaign, the awarenesses towards the HK street sleepers problem can be raised, and people's respect paid to the street sleepers can be encouraged.

Singh and Michelle met and discussed with two of the co-founders of Two presents and presented Sunshine Action's homeless program to them. It was a great opportunity learning about this brand new concept of two presents and we look forward to having a long-term collaboration with them!

On 3rd November, 2015, we went to The Repulse Bay, a corporation owned by The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited and operated by The Peninsula Properties. Together with Sunny, the founder of Sunshine Action, we presented our project to the Marketing & Public Relations Manager and the General Manager, seeking collaboration between the two parties to help the street sleepers.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STREET SLEEPERS

With Hong Kong’s soaring residential property prices, many of the city’s low income households face difficulty in affording their own flats, with some even being forced to become street sleepers. Homelessness has become a prevalent issue in the city, with 1,400 homeless sleeping on the streets in 2014. (SCMP 2014)

Take a look at the infographic below to better put the plight of Hong Kong street sleepers into perspective.
