S*x work and Labour
Labour Day, reminds us to rethink a question that seems simple but is often selectively ignored: who is considered a worker? In Hong Kong, there is a group of people who have long devoted their time, bodies, and emotional labour, taking on risks in exchange for income, yet are often excluded from the category of “work worthy of respect”—s*x workers. The existence of s*x work has never been in doubt; the real question is whether we are willing to recognise it as labour.
Acknowledging s*x work as labour does not mean demanding uniform values, nor romanticising any industry. It simply returns to the most basic principle: anyone who makes a living through labour should enjoy dignity and protection. When a form of work is stigmatised, the result is rarely disappearance; instead, it shifts into more unsafe, harder-to-reach conditions, making support less accessible and violence more likely. The meaning of de-stigmatisation is not about persuasion, but about reducing harm; not about beautifying any industry, but about ensuring that health, dignity, and safety are no longer conditional.
If International Labour Day exists only for accepted occupations, then it loses its fairness. The true spirit of labour should embrace difference and reject dividing who deserves protection based on moral preference. On this day that belongs to workers, perhaps we can take one more step: expand our imagination of “work” and leave space for those overlooked—because respect for labour should never come with conditions.
S*x workers are workers too. Recognising this is not only respect for labour, but also a pragmatic step toward a safer, fairer Hong Kong.
