Global mega-events now treat low-carbon performance as a must, not a bonus. Dr. Lee Ching-yee notes that organizers of events like the National Games and international concerts increasingly consider whether a host city or venue is "green enough" — with green events potentially generating nearly HK$1 billion in additional economic benefits for Hong Kong annually. 🌍🎪

The Foundation was also an early champion of green finance, advocating as far back as 2017 for government-led green bonds — a push that led to Hong Kong's Green Bond Programme in 2018. Today, Hong Kong's international green and sustainable bond issuance accounts for a significant share of Asia's total. 💚📊

Financed Emissions — Climate Risk and Capacity Building for Banks

Climate-related risks are reshaping capital allocation and credit assessment. “Financed emissions” are the greenhouse gas emissions associated with companies or projects financed, invested in, or guaranteed by financial institutions (both on‑balance and off‑balance). Banks should incorporate these indirect emissions into risk management, disclosure and transition planning to mitigate long‑term credit, reputational and regulatory risks. 🌱

Key sector examples:
- Corporate lending: post‑loan assessment for large energy and industrial clients.
- Investment portfolios: quantifying carbon intensity across equity and bond holdings.
- Loan commitments & guarantees: assessing potential future emissions liabilities.

Regulatory & disclosure highlights:
- Adopt quantifiable, traceable financed emissions methodologies aligned with international standards (e.g., PCAF, TNFD) and local regulatory expectations.
- Provide transparent disclosures to stakeholders and incorporate results into stress testing and scenario analysis.

Capacity building recommendations:
1. Establish cross‑department data integration and emission allocation methods.
2. Train credit, investment and risk teams on climate‑related financial assessment.
3. Use internationally comparable measurement tools and reporting templates.
4. Define clear transition pathways and short‑to‑medium term KPIs.

This Tuesday, the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency (HKQAA) held an online sharing seminar on "ISO 14001:2026 Transition Practical Session x Value Chain Technology Session: AI in Practice". 🌐✨

🔹 ISO 14001:2026 Transition Practical Session: Shared key practical points on transitioning to the new standard, helping companies grasp the latest requirements and preparation direction.

🔹 AI in Practice: We were honoured to invite Mr. Demon Cheung, Executive Chairman of the Hong Kong Artificial Intelligence Professionals Association, as guest speaker. He explored the application and value of AI in corporate practice, inspiring participants to think about new opportunities in digital transformation. 💡

「Guangzhou–Hong Kong ESG Series — Seminar on Corporate Sustainability Disclosure and Assurance」Held in Guangzhou 🌱🤝

Held Sept 17, 2026 at the Guangdong Equity Exchange Centre, jointly organised by HKQAA and Guangdong Equity Exchange Centre, co-organised by Guangzhou Green Finance Association, with support from the HK Economic and Trade Office in Guangdong and the Guangzhou Financial Commission Office. 🏢🌏

HKQAA COO Mr. KT Ting highlighted Guangzhou's strategic role in Bay Area green development, and noted Hong Kong's status as an early ISSB adopter bridging sustainability standards between the two regions. 🌿📊

Government, public-sector and HK-listed company representatives from the Bay Area exchanged insights on disclosure/assurance practices and ESG collaboration. 💬🤝

Mr. Chan Chun-yip (HK ETO Guangzhou) spoke on ESG as a driver of competitiveness and global expansion, alongside tax and legal services. 🚀🌍

HKQAA's Mr. William Fu and Mr. Jacky Yeung presented on ESG regulation, disclosure standards, assurance and investment value, plus tips on data accuracy, completeness, transparency and credibility. 📈✅

HKQAA will keep deepening Bay Area cooperation and Guangzhou–HK ESG exchange, supporting China's sustainability disclosure system and firms' global expansion. 💚🌏

More than three decades ago, Dr. Lee Ching-yee, Executive Director of Our Hong Kong Foundation, co-founded Hong Kong's very first civil think tank — the Hong Kong Policy Research Institute — at a time when society had little understanding of what a think tank does, and talent was scarce. 💭

Today, as Hong Kong enters a new stage of stability and progress under "One Country, Two Systems," think tanks like Our Hong Kong Foundation have become vital channels connecting civil society to government. As Dr. Lee explains, the Foundation "combines research with policy advocacy — integrating diverse stakeholder views into objective, independent reports for the government." 🏛️
