🎯Programme Highlights:
AI is transforming digitalisation in the built environment. This sharing will introduce how vibe coding and code agents can empower AEC practitioners to develop custom apps without any prior coding experience. We will explore practical use cases, such as automating repetitive spreadsheet data consolidation, building customised data validation tools and creating lightweight 3D model viewers. The presentation will also cover the necessary knowledge, key features, limitations and useful tips and tricks.

Through vibe coding, AEC practitioners can create customised light tools embedded within their daily workflows to solve real project pain points. This approach lowers technical barriers and unlocks accessible, bottom-up digital innovation for projects in the built environment.

🎯Speaker:
Ir Ken Mao is a HKIE member and a Registered Professional Engineer in the building discipline. He is also a Chartered Builder of the Chartered Institute of Building, an HKIE Engineering BIM Professional and an Engineering BIM Coordinator. He is also a CIC-certified BIM Manager and BIM Coordinator, as well as a Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling. He has over 15 years' experience in construction projects, including civil and building works, and over 10 years' experience in BIM project planning and implementation. This includes establishing information requirements for clients, supervising project information delivery using BIM, and conducting information management audits based on ISO 19650.

Ir Mao is currently a Senior Technical Director at the local BIM consultancy firm BIMNITY, as well as the Head of BIM at a local technology start-up company funded by the HKSTP incubation programme. The companies focus on BIM training and auditing, as well as a BIM x AI research project developing a domain-specific spatial-visual AI model system.

Ir Mao contributes his expertise to the industry by participating in the DEVB's Common Spatial Data Advisory Committee as a non-official member. He also serves as an assessor on the CIC's BIM Assessment Panel (BIMAP) and the HKIE Engineering BIM Certification Panel. In 2025, he planned and led a distinctive event as chairman of the organising committee: HKIBIM x HKITDA BIM Automation Arena 2025.

🎯TECHNICAL VISIT HIGHLIGHTS
We are pleased to invite HKIHT and HKIE CVD members to apply for the Sichuan Technical Study Visit 2026.
This four-day, three-night professional delegation will provide participants with opportunities to visit major transport and infrastructure projects in Sichuan, exchange views with industry counterparts, and learn from practical applications in bridge, tunnel and rail-transit construction at Smart Control Center and construction sites of Lugu Lake Bridge, a cable suspension bridge with a main span over 1600 m, Yanyuan Tunnel and Line 18 Phase III of the Chengdu Metro.
The visit will include technical exchanges with project teams and industry organisations, with a focus on intelligent construction management, major bridge works, tunnel construction and urban rail transit development.

$5,500 *The fee includes Flight tickets, accommodation, transportation in the Chinese Mainland and major meals. No refund will be made once payment has been received.

🚩Technical Seminar Recap: Development of the Loop – Leveraging Innovative Construction Methods and AI Application in Driving Project Excellence - 23 September 2026 🚩

The HKIE Civil Division recently hosted a technical seminar on the Development of the Loop, showcasing how innovative construction methodologies, digitalisation, and artificial intelligence are transforming the delivery of one of Hong Kong's most significant infrastructure projects.

The seminar featured insightful presentations from Ir George Law (CEDD), Mr Hailong Liu (CRBC), Mr Jackson Kok (VSL), and Mr Keith Soon (Tyfron), who shared the project's challenges, innovations, and achievements in delivering critical transport infrastructure within a highly constrained environment.

Participants learned how the project team successfully implemented several first-of-their-kind construction techniques, including Hong Kong's first Special Lifting Frame Er****on Method and the world's first Full-Span Deck Er****on Method for a strategic bridge connection within the Loop development. These approaches enabled construction adjacent to operating railway infrastructure and major cross-boundary transport routes while minimising disruption, enhancing safety, and improving construction efficiency.

A key theme of the seminar was Design for Safety through Innovation. The speakers demonstrated how BIM, drone photogrammetry, LiDAR scanning, engineering analysis, and augmented reality were integrated to identify hazards, conduct virtual rehearsals of high-risk activities, and optimise construction methodologies before site ex*****on. These technologies supported safer operations and improved decision-making throughout project delivery. The session also highlighted the extensive adoption of AI and digital technologies, including:
• AI-BIM integration for planning and progress monitoring
• Autonomous drone flight and site surveying
• AI-enabled 360° image recognition for project management
• Robot dog inspections for site digitisation
• AI Safety Officer platforms for real-time monitoring
• IoT-enabled safety and environmental management systems
These innovations demonstrate how data-driven approaches can enhance project control, safety performance, collaboration, and operational efficiency across large and complex construction projects.

A heartfelt thank you to all speakers with support from Project Manager of West Development Office of CEDD, Ir Benjamin Chan, JP for sharing their valuable experiences and practical insights, and to all participants for their active engagement throughout the seminar. 🌕 Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival with the little ones! ✨

We had a wonderful time on 21 September as HKIE volunteers visited W.F.B. Mantra Institute Nursery School to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with the children! 🥮

We kicked off with some fun ice-breaking games, then learned all about the traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival

Highlight of the day was definitely the DIY Lantern Workshop! 🛠️💡 It was amazing to see the kids team up with our engineer volunteers to build their very own glowing "construction vehicle" lanterns from scratch. The smiles on their faces when they saw their creations light up were absolutely priceless!

Of course, we had to wrap up with a big group photo to capture this warm and joyful moment. 📸

🚩Technical Seminar Recap: Special Inspection, Maintenance, and Fire Protection Technology for Bridge Cable Systems🚩

🌉 On 22 September 2026, the HKIE Civil Division hosted a technical seminar on “Special Inspection, Maintenance, and Fire Protection Technology for Bridge Cable Systems” (橋樑索體系特殊檢測維修及防火技術).

🔍 The seminar explored specialised technologies and practical approaches for the inspection, maintenance and fire protection of bridge cable systems. The session highlighted the importance of effective condition assessment, timely maintenance and appropriate protective measures in safeguarding the structural integrity, durability and long-term performance of cable-supported bridges.

💡 Through the technical sharing, participants gained valuable insights into the challenges associated with bridge cable systems and the engineering solutions available to support their safe and sustainable management.

🎤 Special thanks to our distinguished speaker, Dr Lin Yangzi, for the insightful presentation and professional sharing. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to the Technical Seminar Subcommittee for organising this meaningful event.

🚩 Event Recap: HKIE CVD × AECOM Connect HK 26 – Pathway to Professional Assessment (HKIE Civil Discipline) Lunchtime Sharing 🚩

The HKIE Civil Division (CVD), in collaboration with AECOM Connect HK 26, successfully held a lunchtime sharing on the Pathway to Professional Assessment (HKIE Civil Discipline) on 18 September 2026.

The session provided colleagues with practical guidance on the HKIE Professional Assessment process, including useful preparation tips, key procedures, and relevant considerations for candidates pursuing Corporate Membership in the Civil Discipline. Participants also learned about opportunities under the Reciprocal Recognition Agreements (RRAs) between MHKIE and recognised professional institutions.

A sincere thank you to our speakers—Ir Connie Chan, Ir Simon Ng, Ir Tim Leung, Ir Joe Wong, and Ir Owen Lee—for their insightful sharing. The HKIE Civil Division team was delighted to join the HKIE Presidential Address and Dinner, celebrating the inauguration of Ir Frank Chan as the new President of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Under the theme Connect Minds, Empower Tomorrow, this flagship annual event brought together engineering leaders, practitioners and professionals across all disciplines.

Our Civil Division committee members took this valuable chance to connect with Ir Frank Chan, HKIE office bearers and cross-disciplinary peers. We exchanged ideas on advancing civil engineering excellence, driving innovation and sustainable infrastructure development for Hong Kong.
