Look Up Hong Kong Protect the mental and physical wellbeing of our children by delaying access to smartphones and social media

We believe children in Hong Kong should have the opportunity to grow up with minimal digital distractions, allowing them to fully engage with the physical world, develop meaningful interpersonal relationships and cultivate their natural curiosity and creativity.

We believe that delaying access to a smartphones and social media use during childhood lays the foundation for lifelong health, wellbeing and the ability to thrive in an increasingly digital age.

We are pro-childhood, and we believe in letting kids be kids. The things children need to thrive are simple and free: time to play, space to imagine, and opportunities to connect with other people and the real world.

Principle #4 is one step toward helping children grow up healthier, happier, and more connected to real life. If you believe kids should have the freedom to be kids, help us spread the message!

Small changes at home can create a massive shift, but we believe schools play a big part too. We believe in creating smartphone-free spaces, where kids can put aside the demands of the online world and be kids, and that learning free from digital distractions fosters better academic performance and interpersonal relationships.

We're connecting parents so they can find support and take action. Join our WhatsApp group to find your school! You can also find a letter template to send your school on our website.

Fantastic energy at our Look Up Hong Kong talk at Clearwater Bay School last week! 🌟

The CWBS PTA, school leadership team, and ESF King George V School worked together to provide a clear, consistent, and supportive message for parents navigating the transition from primary to secondary school. This kind of continuous, unified approach across the whole community is exactly what families need as we work to prepare our kids for a digital future.

A huge thank you to the CWBS team and PTA for such a thoughtful, well-put-together effort. We are excited to build on this momentum and do even more together soon! 🤝📱

It's not simply 'use vs. abstinence': the recent World Happiness Report highlights a crucial nuance regarding social media. Analyzing global data, the report shows that 'light users' (less than 1 hour per day) often report higher life satisfaction than non-users. However, satisfaction decreases significantly as hours of use increase past that threshold. For those using social media for 7 or more hours daily, life satisfaction is at its lowest.

Our mission is to provide the education and tools for this necessary balance. We focus on mindful engagement, ensuring that digital tools support mental health rather than undermine it.

Global data from the World Happiness Report 2026 shows a startling truth: youth happiness is declining, especially in regions with the highest digital saturation. Hong Kong is at the heart of this digital challenge. Our mission is to prevent this decline by creating a future where our teens can look up and connect, without the cost to their wellbeing.

Our kids are watching us more than our screens. New research from JAMA Pediatrics shows that when parents are frequently distracted by their phones, children under 5 are more likely to experience behavioural and cognitive challenges.

This week, try the 3 M’s at home:
🔹 Model: Put your phone away during playtime and meals.
🔹 Mentor: Talk to your child about when and why you use devices.
🔹 Monitor: Keep screens out of sight during family time and bedtime.

Can you keep your phone off the table at dinner and out of your hand during play for one whole day? Tag us and share how it goes—we’re in this together.

Hollywood star Joseph Gordon-Levitt warns that "amoral" AI companies prioritize profits over your kids' safety—with more rules for making sandwiches than protecting children from unchecked tech. His powerful testimony in Utah demanded transparency and safeguarding from technology accessible by children. Time to demand better - tag a parent!

In this Senate hearing, cognitive neuroscientist Dr Jared Cooney Horvath warns that when laptops, tablets and other screens flood classrooms, learning drops – across attention, memory, literacy, numeracy and even IQ. He cites data from 80 countries showing that heavy in‑school computer use is linked to significantly lower academic performance compared with students who rarely use tech.

His key message: children are biologically wired to learn from people, not screens – and simply putting “educational” labels on devices does not protect kids’ brains.

For this year's Children’s Mental Health Week, we are embracing the theme "This is My Place." It’s a powerful reminder that when we swap screen time for eye contact, we help our children truly find their place in our community.
At Look Up Hong Kong, we believe in choosing Connection over Connectivity. We advocate for childhoods that are rooted in:
PLAY ⚽
NATURE 🌿
GENUINE INTERACTION 🤝
Our Pledge: Let's put our phones down during family outings this week. Together, we can help our children reclaim the real world as their absolute favorite "place to be."
Join the movement and let’s help the next generation look up and thrive! 🇭🇰❤️
