【🐢世界動物日｜購買前，先停一停、想一想】

幾百蚊就可以買到隻特別嘅爬蟲動物，聽落好似幾平、好吸引？

但喺購買前，你有冇諗過：佢嚟自邊度？相關買賣係咪合法？佢有冇受《瀕危野生動植物種國際貿易公約》（CITES）所保護？

以鱷龜為例，剛孵化嘅龜仔睇落細隻、易養，但大咗體重可以超過60公斤，壽命可超過50年。要照顧好佢哋，唔單止要提供合適嘅居住環境、營養同醫療照顧，仲係幾十年嘅承諾與責任。

可惜部分飼主低估咗照顧佢哋所需嘅時間同資源，當動物長得太大或變得難以照顧時，就選擇棄養。香港都曾發現被棄養嘅鱷龜，佢哋喺本地缺乏天敵，一旦進入野外環境，就有可能威脅本地野生動物及生物多樣性⚠️。

WWF透過GUARD項目，致力減少公眾對非法野生生物貿易嘅需求，並鼓勵大家喺飼養寵物前做足功課，作出負責任嘅選擇。

今日係世界動物日（10月4日），希望大家記住：負責任嘅寵物飼養，唔係由購買後至開始，而喺購買前就已經諗得好清楚💭。帶動物返屋企前，請先了解佢哋嘅來源、保育狀況、福利需求，以及自己係咪有能力照顧佢哋一生一世。

[🐢World Animal Day | Think Before You Buy]

You may see a reptile selling for just a few hundred dollars and think you've found a unique companion. But before buying, ask yourself: Where did it come from? Is the trade legal? Is the species protected under CITES?

Take the alligator snapping turtle as an example. A hatchling may look small and manageable, but it can grow to over 60 kg and live for more than 50 years. Providing proper housing, nutrition and veterinary care is a commitment that lasts decades.

Unfortunately, some owners underestimate these responsibilities and abandon their pets when they become too large or difficult to care for. Alligator snapping turtles have been found abandoned in Hong Kong. With no natural predators here, they can threaten local wildlife and biodiversity⚠️.

Through WWF's GUARD programme, we’re working to reduce demand for illegally traded wildlife and encourage more informed choices by consumers .

This World Animal Day (4 Oct), remember: responsible pet ownership starts before the purchase💭. Consider an animal's source, conservation status, welfare needs and lifelong care requirements before bringing it home.

【晚安！🪷願米埔嘅天空之鏡為你掃走疲倦】

相信大家對問候早午晚安嘅「長輩圖」都唔陌生，而其中一種經常出現嘅花就係 #睡蓮。前幾日我哋分享咗睡蓮唔會有蓮子，今日就同大家分享下喺 #米埔自然保護區 入面一個別名叫「睡蓮池」嘅淡水池塘。

我哋嘅保育團隊同義工們會定期落水清理過度生長嘅雜草，保持池塘有足夠嘅開闊水面🌱🙅‍♀️。如果雜草生得太密，除咗會侵佔睡蓮嘅生長空間，仲會令喜歡開闊水面嘅水鳥難以落腳。維持呢個淡水池塘，可以令唔少偏好淡水嘅濕地動物受惠，其中包括面臨 #高本地滅絕風險 嘅 #水雉 🐦。呢位「凌波仙子」特別鍾意喺有浮葉植物同埋開闊嘅淡水生境活動。多得團隊嘅努力，近年都有朋友仔影到佢哋喺睡蓮池出沒啊！

保護自然，除咗保育野生動物，亦為我哋保留一片可以放慢腳步、感受自然美好嘅空間。下次到米埔參觀時，不妨喺睡蓮池旁停一停，欣賞眼前景色，話唔定仲會見到水雉表演輕功添！

[Good Evening! 🪷 Let Mai Po's “Mirror of the Sky” Wash Away Your Fatigue]

We’ve all seen those classic “Good Morning” or “Good evening” greeting images featuring beautiful and peaceful water lilies 🪷. A few days ago, we shared that water lilies don’t produce lotus seeds. Today, we’d like to show you one of the rain-fed ponds in the , which also known as “water lily pond”.

Regularly, our conservation team and dedicated volunteers wade into the pond to clear the overgrown weeds 🌱🙅‍♀️, ensuring there is enough open water. If these weeds grow too densely, they encroach on the growing space of the water lilies and cover up the open water, making it difficult for waterbirds that prefer open water to land and forage. Maintaining this rain-fed pond benefits lots of wetland species that prefer freshwater, including the Pheasant-tailed Jacana which faces high risk of local extinction 🐦. This “little white water princess” prefers foraging in open freshwater habitats with floating-leaved plants. Thanks to the team’s hard work, birdwatchers have captured sightings of them in this pond in recent years.

Protecting nature is not just about conserving species, it also preserves a space where we can slow down and reconnect with the natural world. Next time when you visit Mai Po, take a pause by the water lily pond and enjoy the view. You might even catch a Pheasant-tailed Jacana showing off its walking skill on the water!

【中秋🌕橋咀洲淨灘成功！🌊】

今日係中秋節翌日（9月26日），WWF🐼聯同漁護署（AFCD）及香港海洋保育平台（Hong Kong Marine Protection Alliance）嘅一眾夥伴，一齊去到橋咀洲進行淨灘行動，過咗一個好有意義嘅中秋節假期！💪

衷心感謝每一位身體力行嘅義工朋友，一齊令海岸環境更乾淨！❤️不過，淨灘應該係最後一步，要真正保護海洋，關鍵在於「源頭減廢」。大家去到郊外、海灘玩，記得「自己垃圾自己帶走」，用更尊重自然嘅方式享受環境，珍惜我哋嘅海洋生態。

[Mid-Autumn Festival🌕Sharp Island Coastal Cleanup🌊]

Today, the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival (26 Sept), WWF-Hong Kong🐼 teamed up with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the Hong Kong Marine Protection Alliance, and our partners for a coastal cleanup at Sharp Island! It was a meaningful way to spend the holiday!💪

A heartfelt thank you to every volunteer who took action to make our coastline cleaner!❤️ Cleaning up is vital, but it’s our last line of defence. The key to truly protecting our oceans is waste reduction at source. When visiting the countryside and beaches, please remember to "Take Your Litter Home" and enjoy nature in a way that shows respect and care for our precious marine ecosystems.

👉 Coming up: See you during the 1/10 Golden Week!
From 1 to 7 October, WWF will continue setting up our marine conservation booth at Sharp Island. Our ocean ambassadors will be there to promote ocean-friendly practices, including:

🦀 Practising responsible ocean-use (e.g., do not touch or collect marine life!)
🛶 Following “Coral Safe Routes" (guiding snorkellers and kayakers to select appropriate entry and exit points)

【🌕中秋節快樂🥮】

夜晚嘅月色無聲地映照喺睡蓮池上🪷。望住呢個寧靜嘅畫面，唔知大家會唔會同小編一樣，覺得成個人都放鬆晒，俾呢個美麗嘅大自然治療到呢？☺️

有別於可以食用嘅蓮花（或稱荷花），睡蓮並不產蓮子，亦不長蓮藕，但佢並唔係毫無用處〜睡蓮係浮葉型植物，葉片貼住水面而生，可以阻擋部分水體吸收太陽，調節水溫，同時為各種動物提供休息、躲藏、覓食嘅地方。另外，睡蓮仲會吸收水中營養，從而有助淨化水質💦，真係唔可以睇小佢啊！

Unlike edible lotus, water lilies don’t yield lotus seeds or lotus roots, yet they are far from useless! Water lilies are floating plants, their leaves drift on water surface. By blocking a portion of sunlight, they help regulate water temperature, creating resting, hiding and feeding grounds for wildlife. They can also absorb nutrients to purify the water💦. We really can’t underestimate them.

七年生態監測數據，揭示大嶼山水口沙坪正面對日益嚴峻嘅保育壓力⚠️！

雖然水口沙坪依然係全球瀕危中國鱟嘅重要育苗場，但自2018年起沙坪整體蜆類密度足足下降咗 65% 📉，反映呢個棲息環境正承受極大壓力。

WWF最新發布嘅《水口沙坪保育建議書》，以科學證據及「智慧保育」數據為基礎，提出多項保育建議，以保育水口沙坪嘅生態價值，包括分區管理保護核心生態敏感地區、積極及有效管理遊客承載量、挖蜆活動，同埋推廣規管挖蜆工具。

While the sandflat remains a vital nursery ground for the globally Endangered Chinese Horseshoe Crab, overall clam density has declined by 65% 📉 since 2018, signaling increasing pressure on this unique ecosystem.

WWF-Hong Kong's newly released 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘩𝘶𝘪 𝘏𝘢𝘶 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘵 leverages science and technology to propose evidence-based conservation recommendations to safeguard Shui Hau's ecological value, including habitat zoning, proactive management of visitor capacity and clam harvesting, and regulation of harvesting tools.

To foster dialogue and build consensus, WWF-Hong Kong recently convened the Shui Hau Sandflat Science and Conservation Forum👥💬, bringing together experts, academics, government representatives and stakeholders to discuss horseshoe crab conservation, visitor management, and the future of Shui Hau.

[Thinking About Conservation? Turns Out There's More Than One Way In🌊🦩]

Ever wondered how someone with zero ocean experience, or someone who only picked up birdwatching at university, ends up building a career in conservation?

Introducing our two interviewees of the latest issue 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦. Meet Thomas, now a Senior Conservation Officer with our Oceans team, who first fell for coral while learning to dive during COVID lockdowns. And meet Jackie, now working as a wetland research officer at Mai Po, who first discovered the "invisible connections" between wetlands through a book about migratory waterbirds she came across at university, a discovery that set her on the path to waterbird research and conservation.

Their stories show that there's no single way to start in conservation, but curiosity and the courage to give it a go are what carry you through.

【WWF 海洋保育小隊首次喺吐露港海域生境修復地點錄得海馬！】

從 #吐露漁音 項目嘅漁民訪談中得知💬，海馬喺 #吐露港及赤門海峽 曾經十分常見，港內亦盛載豐富多樣嘅沿岸生境，包括珊瑚群落、紅樹林泥灘及海草床等等。過去亦有研究於港內多個近岸生境發現海馬幼體。然而，喺海岸線發展及愈趨頻繁嘅人類活動影響下，水底環境曾一度惡化，海洋生物亦面對種種挑戰🌊。

自2023年展開 #珊海無盡 計劃以嚟，WWF 海洋保育小隊聯同香港中文大學珊瑚學院 一直喺吐露港及赤門海峽進行 #珊瑚生境修復。🤿呢三年間，我哋共移植超過1200塊珊瑚碎塊，並進行恆常監察，希望透過持續嘅生境修復工作，可以逐步恢復吐露港嘅生物多樣性及海洋資源。

至2025年，我哋其中一個修復地點巳累積錄得超過65 種魚類🐟！海馬係珊瑚群落指標物種之一，亦喺國際自然保護聯盟（IUCN）紅色名錄中被列為「易危」保育類動物。今次喺珊瑚修復地點搵到海馬BB實在令人鼓舞 ！

[First Seahorse Sighting at the WWF’s Coral Restoration Site at !]

As fishers shared through our project💬, seahorses used to be common within Tolo Harbour and Channel (Tolo Seascape). The harbour also once supported abundant and diverse coastal habitats, such as coral communities, mangrove mudflats, and seagrass beds. Previous studies also reported juvenile seahorses' appearance in various nearshore habitats within. However, due to coastal development and increasingly frequent human activities, the underwater environment had deteriorated for a time, and diverse marine life has been facing challenges🌊.

Supported by the project, the WWF Oceans Conservation Team and the Coral Academy of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, has been carrying out coral habitat restoration work in the Tolo Seascape since 2023. 🤿In the past three years, over 1,200 coral fragments have been transplanted to the restoration sites, alongside regular monitoring. We hope these ongoing habitat restoration efforts will facilitate the recovery of biodiversity and marine resources across the seascape.

By 2025, more than 65 fish species have been documented at one of the restoration sites🐟! The recent observation of seahorse juvenile, an indicator species for coral communities as well as a “Vulnerable” species on the IUCN Red List, is an encouraging finding for the team!
