Artificial Intelligence, Human Knowledge, and the Public Good:
A CORE Academy Manifesto on the Human Conditions of Intelligence in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence is becoming one of the defining forces of our age. Yet the central question is not only what AI can do, but what human beings should become in relation to it.

The Manifesto argues that AI should not be understood merely as a tool of calculation, prediction, automation, or efficiency. It must be placed within a broader human horizon: knowledge, judgment, education, responsibility, trust, dignity, and the public good.

CORE Academy affirms that AI governance is not merely the governance of machines. It is also the defense and renewal of the human conditions under which intelligence remains wise, knowledge remains trustworthy, education remains liberating, and technology remains answerable to humanity.

CORE Academy is pleased to share our new Fellows’ Dialogue with Professor Peter Burke, Fellow of CORE Academy and one of the most distinguished cultural historians of our time.

Titled “From the Commonwealth of Learning to the Future of Knowledge,” the dialogue explores the continuing meaning of the old ideal of the respublica litterarum — the “Commonwealth of Learning” — in a world where scholarly communication is more global than ever, yet also increasingly fragmented by specialization, digital technologies, and geopolitical division.

Professor Burke reflects on the future of knowledge in the digital and AI age, including the distinction between information, knowledge, and judgment; the importance of source criticism and verification; the role of the humanities; and the older dreams of omniscience, prediction, and mastery that artificial intelligence may be reviving today.

One memorable insight from the dialogue is that, in an age of rapid scanning and information overload, students may now need not courses in speed reading, but courses in slow reading.

This dialogue was conducted by the CORE Academy Secretariat and edited by Raymond J. Wu as part of CORE Academy’s continuing effort to provide a platform for Fellows’ reflections on scholarship, knowledge, and the responsibilities of international academic life.

CORE Academy participated in IVI Summit 2026, held from 10 to 12 June 2026 at Maynooth University, Ireland.

Convened by the Innovation Value Institute under the theme “20 Years of Impactful Research – What’s Next?”, the Summit brought together an international community of scholars, technology leaders, public-sector representatives, policy specialists, and innovation practitioners to discuss digital transformation, data governance, artificial intelligence, and the future of research impact.

Raymond J. Wu, Executive Vice Secretary-General of CORE Academy, represented the Academy at the Summit and participated in the panel discussion “The Future of Research: Is International Collaboration the Way Forward?” He shared reflections on responsible openness, trust, fairness, and the changing responsibilities of knowledge institutions in the age of AI.

At the Summit Gala Dinner, CORE Academy Fellow Professor Piero Formica and Raymond J. Wu were both invited to deliver keynote addresses. Their remarks presented CORE Academy’s recent work in digital scholarly publishing, including The Horizon of Artificial Intelligence: An Odyssey of Human and Artificial Intelligence, published as part of CORE Academy Digital Editions.

CORE Academy’s participation in IVI Summit 2026 marked an important step in strengthening dialogue with IVI, Maynooth University, and wider international networks concerned with AI, digital transformation, innovation, and research collaboration.

CORE Academy is pleased to announce that Professor Kees Schouhamer Immink, IEEE Medal of Honor recipient and one of the foremost pioneers of the digital storage age, has been appointed as a Member of the Academic Committee of the CORE Academy.

Professor Immink is widely recognized for his landmark contributions to the coding technologies that made the CD, DVD, and Blu-ray Disc possible. His work helped shape the foundations of modern digital audio, video, and data storage, and has had a profound impact on global engineering and technological civilization.

We warmly congratulate Professor Immink on this appointment and look forward to his contributions to the Academy’s academic development, international engagement, and strategic vision.
