🎉An Incredible Day Exploring the Marine Regional Headquarters!💛

A heartfelt thanks to all the seafarers, members, and guests who joined our Marine Regional Headquarters Visit—a rare opportunity to visit a key operational site in the maritime sector, which is not open to the public.

Through this exclusive guided tour, we gained a deeper understanding of the development of the Marine Police, as well as how the wider marine industry continues to evolve to support safer and more efficient maritime operations. We hope the visit helped broaden everyone’s knowledge and appreciation for the important work behind the scenes.

Our first-generation electric vehicle has covered approximately 100,000 kilometers over eight years of operation. Due to natural battery aging, its performance has significantly declined, and it has now been retired.

We have since replaced it with a brand-new fleet of fully electric vehicles, featuring a newly designed Mission to Seafarers signage.

We sincerely hope to continue providing the highest standard of welfare services, including transporting more seafarers from their ships to our Kwai Chung seaman center and the Mariners Hotel for refreshments and shore leave. 😊🥳🚢⚓️🚌🚐🚙

IKEA has entered into a three-year partnership with The Mission to Seafarers (MtS), a leading international charity, aimed at improving the welfare, rights, and working conditions of seafarers across its supply chain.

As part of this collaboration, we are delighted that Ms. Ingrid Sistere, Ms. Pamela Nutjariya, Mr. John Zhong - representing different regions of the IKEA group - spent a week with us at the Kwai Chung Seafarers’ Centre. During their visit, they conducted ship welfare visits and met with seafarers who came to the centre. They greatly enjoyed engaging with seafarers from diverse countries, nationalities, and backgrounds, both onboard vessels and at the centre, to gain a deeper understanding of life at sea, daily work routines, and the welfare conditions onboard.

Together, The Mission to Seafarers and IKEA also aim to raise public awareness of the essential role seafarers play. We encourage all stakeholders who rely on international shipping within their supply chains to use their influence to help protect seafarers’ rights and prioritise their wellbeing. 🫶🏼⚓️🚢

The rise of the so called "dark fleet" of sanctions evading vessels is casting a long shadow over the maritime world and seafarers can find themselves caught in the middle, often without even knowing it. Crew members may have little idea who actually owns the ship they are sailing on, let alone the cargo it is carrying.

In the latest issue of The Sea, Michael Grey advises seafarers on how to protect themselves, from sticking with reputable operators to knowing the warning signs of unscrupulous employers.

"Under no circumstances should a seafarer ever pay an agent for employment."
