Inside China’s National New Energy Vehicle Innovation Centre🚗⚡

How much do we really understand about new energy vehicles?

As Protégés Cyrus, Stone and Vincent, we recently visited the 國家新能源汽車技術創新中心 in Beijing — and quickly realised that new energy vehicles are far more than simply “cars powered by electricity.”

Inside the centre, we discovered that the real story begins far beneath the vehicle shell. From intelligent chips powering the car’s “brain” 🧠, to precision instruments testing semiconductor reliability, battery R&D platforms, rigorous performance validation systems, and immersive driving simulators recreating real user scenarios 🎮 — every layer revealed how complex and interconnected the ecosystem truly is. Finished electric and autonomous vehicle models were displayed as showcases of integration, not just products on display.

What struck us most is that this industry is not built on isolated upgrades. It is the result of a fully coordinated value chain — chip design, standards development, system integration, safety verification and beyond. As engineers, we are not simply optimising parts; we are part of a system-level revolution, reshaping how mobility is designed, powered and experienced. 🔧🌱

We left with a renewed perspective: the future of mobility is not defined by what we see on the road, but by the invisible engineering beneath it — and that’s where real transformation begins. 🚀

From Steel Furnace to Innovation Landmark: Our Visit to Shougang Park 🔥➡🌆
Have you ever imagined an abandoned blast furnace becoming one of Beijing’s newest landmarks?
As Protégés Cyrus, Stone and Vincent, walking through Shougang Park felt like stepping into a living lesson of engineering reinvention. After steel production ceased, the site was not demolished. Instead, its powerful industrial skeleton was preserved and infused with new purpose. Today, it has evolved into a thriving hub for innovation, trade and technology incubation — and even hosted the Big Air venue for the 2022 Winter Olympics. 🏂
What inspired us most is how engineering connects every chapter of this transformation. From industrial manufacturing to adaptive reuse, and now to nurturing future technologies, the same engineering mindset continues to shape its evolution. Even today, around 60% of the materials used in new energy vehicle panels are supplied by the Shougang Group. 🚗⚡
The visit also prompted us to reflect on how advanced steel applications continue to shape modern infrastructure. For instance, ultra‑high strength steel S960 has been applied in Hong Kong’s Fanling North Footbridge project — showing how material innovation and structural engineering go hand in hand in building lighter yet stronger structures.
Walking beneath the towering furnaces, we realised that engineering is not only about building what’s next — it is about reimagining what already exists and turning yesterday’s foundations into tomorrow’s opportunities.

Over the last two weekends (11/4 & 18/4), 84 students from 15 schools (21 teams) transformed from code-curious to algorithm-masters. We dove deep into how engineers solve the ”shortest path“ problems using Python—and the results were legendary! 🛣️💻

Have you ever wondered how Google Maps magically finds the fastest route to your destination, how Uber drivers reach you in minutes, or how your online parcels arrive at your doorstep so efficiently? The ”shortest path“ isn‘t just a math concept; it is a vital engine of our daily lives, ensuring maximum efficiency and saving time in everything we do.

During the workshop, students were taught the fundamentals of Python coding and were guided by our tutors to bring the Dijkstra Algorithm to life through their own scripts. Beyond the screen, teams tackled a challenging worksheet designed to test their engineering judgment, analytical skills, and problem-solving abilities.

It was a tough competition, but we were impressed by their talent! Congratulations to the top three teams who demonstrated exceptional skill and walked away with book vouchers! 🏆📚

HKIE PPC and Insquare Foundation are proud to continue engaging future talents with the latest technology and innovation. By bridging the gap between theory and code, we are sparking the curiosity that will build the cities of tomorrow.

Check out the slides for some of our favorite moments and that massive group photo! 📸👉

Who’s ready for the next challenge? 🛠️🔥
