Some people find socialising energising, while others feel increasingly exhausted. If you’re the latter, you may be experiencing social fatigue.
Social fatigue refers to a state in which an excessive amount of social interaction places a strain on your body and mind, leaving you temporarily feeling low and drained. Psychologist Shawna Courter¹ compares this state to a “social hangover”, describing the body and brain’s response as being similar to the effects of being drunk. When experiencing social fatigue, we may feel tired and find it difficult to concentrate. Although socialising can bring us joy, it also takes energy. Social fatigue, therefore, is not exclusive to certain types of people or introverts. Amid busy lives and intense social interaction, people of any age or personality may feel exhausted. 😮💨
Sometimes, we may not feel like talking, replying to messages or interacting with anyone, and may simply want some quiet time alone. This does not mean we are lazy, cold or antisocial. It may be our body’s way of telling us that we need to rest and take better care of ourselves. When dealing with social fatigue, we can begin by acknowledging our needs and looking after ourselves: setting aside time to be alone, learning to set boundaries, and remembering that we do not have to accept every invitation. We can also allow ourselves the time and space to recharge at our own pace. Sometimes, giving ourselves that space is already a gentle and important way to recover. 🫂
