Growing recognition for the Greater Bay Archipelago.

The Ministry of Ecology and Environment included Mirs Bay and Zhuhai’s Wanshan Archipelago in the fourth batch of outstanding and beautiful bays. Earlier, Daya Bay was recognized as a beautiful bay as part of the third batch.

The Beautiful Bay initiative, launched in China in 2021, aims to create pristine coastal environments characterized by clear seawater, clean beaches and thriving habitats for fish and seabirds, fostering harmony between humans and the oceans.

In the meantime, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao have joined hands to ensure a beautiful and internationally recognized first-class Greater Bay Archipelago.

Paradoxically, the path to a high-end yacht economy could lie in providing support for growing the grass roots who enjoy boating and watersports

“So if you want to attract the big boats, you should focus on the economy of the small boats … make sure that that economy works, so that you have a large group of people who know the water.”

Paul Zimmerman, honorary president of the association and an urban planning advocate, said a single government body with the budget, authority and mandate to manage the entire marine recreation ecosystem was needed, breaking the current fragmented approach where responsibility was split ineffectively between the Marine Department, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Development Bureau and others.

Yacht tourism could potentially be worth billions of dollars annually to Hong Kong’s economy, but unlocking that potential remains a challenge.
