On June 28th, we successfully reactivated our ghost net cleanup operations in Hong Kong, introducing a new vessel, captain, and crew.
Leveraging the captain’s invaluable local insights, we targeted several strategic locations and conducted two dives. Both dives yielded significant results, allowing us to recover massive gill nets of varying ages.
Notably, during the second dive, we discovered nets that were actively trapping marine life and successfully freed the ensnared fish and crabs.
Environmental conditions varied greatly between the two dives. The first dive benefited from excellent visibility, which facilitated a relatively smooth cleanup. In contrast, the second dive presented a greater challenge with low visibility and water temperatures of 23°C, typical for late June in Hong Kong.
Despite these conditions, the team performed exceptionally well, working together for the first time. Divers of all training levels demonstrated good trim and positioning, remained calm in the poor visibility, and strictly adhered to their assigned roles.
While we identified areas for improvement in handling large nets, the overall ex*****on was a testament to our team’s discipline and skill.
