ISCM supports the Government’s new policy initiative to grant permission for presence of dogs on food premises, and views this as a positive step towards fostering a more inclusive, vibrant, and experience-led city offering.

Food & Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) has arranged four trade sharing sessions to F&B operators on the proposed arrangements on 11, 12, 13 and 28 May. ISCM is pleased to be represented by our Vice-Chair, Internal Affairs, Michelle Lee, and Vice‑Chair of General Affairs, Monica Hong, who share current pet-friendly policy in Hong Kong malls to the participants.

Through these sessions, ISCM is contributing practical experience and insights from the shopping centre and F&B sectors.

Three key themes emerged from the discussions:

1️⃣ A new opportunity for shopping centre and dining
The policy reflects evolving consumer expectations, where pets are increasingly integrated into daily lifestyles. Pet-friendly dining presents a clear opportunity to enhance Hong Kong’s retail appeal, drive footfall, and increase dwell time — generating tangible commercial value for shopping centres and F&B operators.

2️⃣ Advancing experience-led placemaking
Allowing dogs in approved food premises supports the continued shift towards experience-driven retail environments. It enables operators and landlords to create more engaging, differentiated destinations that foster stronger emotional connections with customers.

3️⃣ The importance of practical implementation
The industry welcomes the development of a clear and workable framework covering hygiene standards, operational arrangements, and stakeholder responsibilities. Effective and practical implementation will be critical to ensuring industry confidence while upholding public health standards.
This initiative represents both a response to market demand and a forward-looking business opportunity. With thoughtful ex*****on, it has the potential to create shared value for the city, for shopping centres, for operators, and for customers, further strengthening Hong Kong’s position as a leading retail and dining destination.

On 7th May 2026, our Vice‑Chair of General Affairs, Monica Hong, moderated a panel at Soho House Hong Kong on Fashion, Sport & the City. She was joined by Prof. Esterina Nervino, PhD (CityUHK), Dr. Joey Chan (Lululemon), Vincenzo CARRIERI (Canali), and Denise Yeung (Hong Kong's first female Chinese racing driver headed to Le Mans). The conversation drew a great turnout and offered candid, cross‑industry perspectives.

Three themes stood out:

1️⃣ Luxury has evolved. High-end products are more accessible now, and sport has become the way brands keep customers coming back – but only if the brand's values truly match what they stand for. Consumers want to wear the same thing from morning exercise to happy hour in the evening. Emotional connection is extremely important between brands and consumers.

"Run Club is the new dating app!"

2️⃣ Hong Kong can become a regional sports events hub. The city has the density and energy. The opportunity is to shift from one‑off events to a genuine sports ecosystem – grassroots to elite.

3️⃣ The common thread: corporate citizenship. This is not just about CSR. Brands, landlords, government, and citizens should move in the same direction – in communication, marketing, and efforts to make society a better place.

"How can we connect fashion and sports back to the city, to bring positive impact to the community?"

In a compact city like Hong Kong, we can actually build the community together.

The ISCM Fireside Chat: 2026 Hong Kong Retail & Shopping Centre Outlook went off without a hitch! 🔥

The energy in the room was simply fantastic, and it was wonderful to see so many sharp minds from across Hong Kong's retail and shopping centre industry come together for a truly open and engaged conversation.

Kathy Lee (Colliers) and Helen Mak (Knight Frank), moderated by Lewis Yau, guided us through an evening packed with insight. From Q1 retail performance across Luxury, Sports and F&B, to the hottest emerging leasing trends, and all the way to some genuinely exciting forward looking ideas around pet friendly policies, the silver economy, NGO pop ups and the unique emotional pull of Hong Kong nostalgia. There was no shortage of food for thought.

The discussion was candid, data driven and grounded in real world experience, exactly the kind of conversation our industry needs right now. Turnout was exceptional, the programme ran like clockwork, and the networking session over refreshments was the perfect way to round off the night. 🥂

None of this would have been possible without the support of our wonderful community. Thank you all for showing up and making it such a memorable evening.

Let's keep the momentum going and move our industry forward together! 💪

The Institute of Shopping Centre Management (ISCM) was honoured to participate in the China International Consumer Products Expo (CICPE) and engage with the Hainan Provincial Bureau of International Economic Development.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to EY for bringing together industry, academia and policy leaders on such a meaningful platform, facilitating valuable dialogue and exchange.

The discussion highlighted the growing importance of integrating tourism, retail and policy in shaping the next generation of destination-driven commercial ecosystems. As Hainan continues to advance its role as an international consumption centre, the alignment between global brands, shopping centre operators and enabling policies will be key to unlocking long-term value.

ISCM remains committed to fostering industry dialogue, facilitating cross-market collaboration, and contributing insights from Hong Kong and international markets to support sustainable development in tourism-driven retail environments.

We look forward to continued engagement with our partners across regions.
