History
The Geological Society of Hong Kong (GSHK) was established by a group of local geologists in 1982 with a goal to advance geosciences development in Hong Kong and to provide a platform for both professionals and amateurs to meet. Since then, GSHK organizes regularly geological conferences, seminars, local and overseas field trips for both members and non-members to explore different aspects

relating to geosciences locally and regionally. At present, the Society has about 250 members, including professional geologists from the public and private sectors, academia, as well as teachers, students and amateurs.

The expedition to the Ninepin Islands, jointly organized by the Geological Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, on August 14th, has successfully concluded! We sincerely thank the public for their enthusiastic support and registration; unfortunately, due to safety considerations, only 60 places could be allocated. We also extend our gratitude to the participants who braved the rain and wind, displaying their passion for the Cretaceous supervolcano! 🫡💪

Although the rain and waves prevented us from visiting the Ninepin Islands due to safety concerns, the group then went to 🏠 Kau Sai Village to learn more about the history of the Hakka fishing village; we also visited the “Dried Scallop Stone,” which also features a hexagonal columnar structure, and closely observed its prominent crystals of potassium feldspar and quartz. 💎🔮

Thank you all for your understanding and companionship in the rain. We hope that the next expedition will be blessed with clear skies so we can truly set foot on the Ninepin Islands! ☀️🌊

===========================================

You are cordially invited to Geoscience Workshop 2026, an engaging event dedicated to sharing how scientists study minerals and rocks, and how those studies help us understand the world we live in. This workshop brings Earth science to life by showing the methods geologists use to uncover the stories recorded in rocks.

At the workshop, we will demonstrate real samples collected from different parts of the world. You will have the opportunity to explore how minerals and rocks can be observed, analysed, and interpreted from a geologist’s perspective. We will also highlight how these studies contribute to our broader understanding of Earth processes and history.

To make the learning experience interactive and memorable, we will use VR, AR, and games throughout the event. These tools will help illustrate the science behind geoscience and show what it looks like to “think like a geologist,” turning complex concepts into a fun and approachable experience for all participants.

Date: 31 July 2026 (Friday)
Time: 14:00-16:30
Speaker: Dr. TAM Pui Yuk Tammy

Technical Site Visit to Six Pacific Place (6PP) Subway Construction Project

On 4 July 2026, the Geological Society of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Regional Group of the Society of London and the Macao Geosciences Society jointly hosted the Technical Site Visit to Six Pacific Place (6PP) Subway Construction Project. The visit brought together geologists and professionals from across the region to gain firsthand exposure to one of Hong Kong’s most complex underground developments.

The visit provided participants with a unique opportunity to observe the ongoing underground works beneath Admiralty, where the 6PP development integrates a new subway link connecting 6PP to the existing Queensway Subway. A key highlight was the 77 metre long tunnel currently under construction, driven through soft ground, mixed ground and rock with a high water table, presenting significant engineering and geological challenges.

Attendees were given a detailed briefing on excavation methods and ground treatment strategies, including the application of different grouting techniques to control water ingress. The project team also explained the use of advanced instrumentation and monitoring systems designed to mitigate risks to nearby structures, ensuring that impacts were carefully managed throughout the tunnelling process. The visit concluded with an observation at the excavation face where drilling and break excavation was actively underway. The team explained how the work was carried out in limited space, with only a small muck out window available for spoil removal, requiring precise scheduling and logistics. Adding to the complexity, the tunnel was being constructed directly underneath an operating building, demanding strict control of vibration and settlement to ensure safety and uninterrupted use above.
