The Geological Society of Hong Kong (GSHK) held a geological visit to the northern Guangdong Province on 28 to 30 March 2026.

On day 1, the group of 18 participants visited the Guangdong Grand Canyon, which is a massive, beautiful gorge located in Ruyuan. The Grand Canyon is about 15 kilometers long and over 400 meters deep, and mainly made up of quartz sandstone of Devonian age. The visit started at the crest of the canyon, which was lifted up due to mountain-building movements, and was then eroded and etched by rainwater and rivers over millions of years to form the spectacular steep cliffs and waterfall we see today. Some of the participants made all the way up and down the famous "Sky Ladder", a giant stone staircase with over 1,300 steps that leads us down to the valley floor.

On day 2 and 3, the group visited the Danxiashan UNESCO Global Geopark, characterized by multi-layered red beds formed by fluvial deposition in Cretaceous, and crafted by uplift, weathering and erosion. Despite of the heavy rain, the group enjoyed the hikes and boat trip, with breathtaking landscapes of rounded peaks, pillars, cliffs and gorges made up of sandstone and conglomerate — known as the Danxia landforms. Culturally, the geopark is home to ancient Buddhist temples carved into cliff faces. The group also visited the Danxiashan museum, which showcased the geology and landform of the geopark.

GSHK thanks the Geological Society of Guangdong and relevant geological teams for organizing the visit.

Technical Site Visit to the Relocation of Diamond Hill Fresh Water and Salt Water Service Reservoirs to Caverns Project
On 21 March 2026, the Geological Society of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Regional Group of the Society of London and the Macao Geosciences Society jointly hosted the Technical Site Visit to the Relocation of Diamond Hill Fresh Water and Salt Water Service Reservoirs to Caverns Project.
This pioneering initiative by the Water Supplies Department involves relocating the existing service reservoirs and associated facilities into caverns, thereby freeing up the original site for housing and other community developments while ensuring a reliable, high-quality water supply. As a landmark underground project, it exemplifies Hong Kong’s cutting-edge expertise in ground engineering and cavern construction for critical infrastructure.
During the visit, participants engaged directly with the project team, gaining valuable insights into the site’s geological conditions, engineering design, and construction management, while also observing the ongoing tunnel excavation firsthand. The technical highlights of the visit include an insightful discussion on tunnel design and groundwater management strategies for long-term reservoir cavern stability, and demonstration of the 4S (Smart Site Safety System) application, enhancing real-time monitoring, hazard detection, and worker safety in the confined tunnel environments
We extend our sincere appreciation to the project team from Binnies Hong Kong Limited and Chun Wo–Sinohydro Joint Venture for hosting the visit and generously sharing their expertise. We look forward to the safe and successful ex*****on of the upcoming drill-and-blast operations and the continued progress of this remarkable project.
