A comic and anime expo in Jinan, eastern China, sparked online debate after a woman dressed in a kimono to cosplay Demon Slayer character Nezuko Kamado was refused entry. A security guard told her that wearing a kimono was not allowed at the event, stating it violated venue rules. The exchange was recorded and widely shared on social media.

Organizers have not clarified whether the restriction was announced beforehand. While many fans questioned why Japanese-themed cosplay was barred at an anime event, others supported the decision, citing historical sensitivities. The incident highlights ongoing tensions between pop culture fandom and cultural or political boundaries in public events.

Distribution of Chinese Sub-Groups Across Southeast Asia.

This map illustrates the major Chinese ethnic sub-groups that have settled throughout Southeast Asia — from the Hokkien communities dominating Indonesia and the Philippines, to Teochew, Cantonese, Hakka, Hainanese, and Yue-Yunnanese populations spread across Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Each group contributed to the region’s trade, language, and cultural diversity for centuries, shaping the vibrant multicultural identity of Southeast Asia today.
