SEWA For Nepal

SEWA For Nepal SEWA - Shelter, Education, Welfare Association. Rebuilding communities. Our transition from short-term relief to long-term program gave birth to SEWA For Nepal.

“Sewa or Seva” is a Sanskrit word meaning “selfless service” or work performed without any thought of reward or repayment. SEWA For Nepal traces it’s origin to “Tents For Nepal” which was established on the 27th of April 2015. Tents For Nepal was a pop-up short term relief program focused on delivering essential materials to the victims and survivors in Nepal. SEWA is an acronym for Shelter, Educa

tion & Welfare Association and we are focused on rebuilding communities in the hardest hit districts of Nepal which encompasses Gorkha, Rasuwa, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Nuwakot, Kavre, Dhading, Ramechhap and Latipur. Our mission under SEWA includes rebuilding homes and schools, improving healthcare and furthering community welfare in areas such as employment and alternative or collective income. Under the Tents For Nepal program, we acquired (purchased and donated) essential relief materials such as tents/tarps, sleeping bags/mattress and medicine including water purification tools/ tablets in Hong Kong and transported them to Nepal over multiple trips. One of the key materials “food” was sourced locally for multiple reasons including cost and palatability. Additionally, we also supplied the people with torches, solar lamps, sanitation products and safety gear for volunteers. Tents For Nepal’s program which was due to close as soon as the last shipment reached Nepal, however due to the second major earthquake (12th of May) we have decided to continue with some short term relief aid, predominantly in short-term shelter. We are a direct impact relief program at the grassroots level.
