BAYAN TO SENATE: STOP HARBORING SUSPECTED MASS MURDERER BATO
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) strongly calls on the Philippine Senate to immediately surrender Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa to the proper authorities so he can be brought before the International Criminal Court in The Hague to face trial for his crimes against humanity.
The sanctuary provided by the Senate for a person wanted for mass murder under the leadership of Duterte loyalist Sen. Alan Cayetano is both shameful and utterly despicable. A lawmaking institution expected to serve as a bastion of accountability and justice is now unmasked as a hiding place for lawbreakers and enabler of impunity.
The ICC warrant of arrest states reasonable grounds to believe that dela Rosa is an indirect co-perpetrator for the crime against humanity of murder committed during Rodrigo Duterte’s bogus “war on drugs.” The ICC Pre-Trial Chamber has found reasonable grounds to believe that dela Rosa was a key implementer of the drug war, made “essential contributions” to the killings by promoting, enabling and directing murderous operations nationwide.
These are not ordinary criminal charges that can simply be brushed aside by institutional courtesies, threats of contempt, and inventing bogus grounds for protective custody. No public office should shield anyone from accountability, especially one whose murderous campaign masquerading as law enforcement victimized thousands of poor Filipinos.
The new Senate leadership should not aid or abet attempts to evade accountability. Is it not enough that the Senate is already coddling alleged thieves and plunderers among its ranks that it now wants to harbor a fugitive and suspected mass murderer inside its august halls?
BAYAN stands with the families of Duterte’s and dela Rosa’s victims who have long sought justice for their loved ones. The Filipino people deserve truth, accountability and justice for the thousands killed in the drug war.
Sen. dela Rosa must face the charges against him before the ICC. The Senate should immediately cooperate for his surrender to The Hague. #
