Recent events relating to dogs in Hong Kong have left many responsible guardians and animal welfare minded citizens gravely concerned.
We do not wish to see fear, anger, conflict or abandonment increase due to the labelling of certain breeds of dogs, purely based on their look, size or perceived behavioural traits.
We wish to see transparency, accountability, responsibility and empathy prevail in all policies and situations surrounding the management of dogs - with scientifically and behaviourally sound advice utilised.
Hong Kong in recent years has made positive strides forward in becoming pet inclusive, however larger issues still persist.
- Continued stalling on amendments to Cap169 and the long awaited, critical need to introduce enforceable ‘Duty of Care’
- Illegal smuggling and breeding
- Lack of centralised and Government backed TNVR initiatives, humanely tackling population management
- Enforcement issues related to responsible dog management
There needs to be much greater clarity on the existing legislations, policies, classification of and any proposed amendments to dog related legislation.
Public and dog safety can be improved with continued education, sensible and respectful behaviour from all parties and humane polices related to dog keeping.
We simply, must do better by dogs 🐕
