🌿 Discover Yellow Dragon Gorge with Rory Mackay – Lantau Island🌿

Hidden deep within Lantau’s glorious countryside lies Yellow Dragon Gorge — a secluded oasis far from the city’s hustle and bustle.

On this adventure, participants will journey boulder by boulder upstream into a dramatic vertical landscape, surrounded by cliffs and cascading waterfalls. It’s a wild, breathtaking setting where you’ll scarcely believe you’re still in Hong Kong.

✨ The trip offers ample time to soak in the majesty of the gorge and enjoy multiple waterfalls along the way.

⚡ Difficulty: Moderate. The route is technical, involving stone‑to‑stone stepping and skirting around waterfalls, so a degree of agility is required.

📅 Jun 27 - Join us for this unforgettable experience led by Rory Mackay and explore one of Hong Kong’s hidden natural treasures!

✨ Join us for Keith Macgregor’s Talk – 22 June ✨

Between 1950 and 1980, Hong Kong’s streets glowed with neon. These gas‑filled glass tubes lit up the city in dazzling shapes, designs, and colours — symbols of a booming metropolis.

Photographer Keith Macgregor will share how he documented this glorious era. In 1998, he spent over 40 nights walking and driving across Hong Kong to record nearly every neon sign — from Aberdeen to Shau Kei Wan, Tsim Sha Tsui to Sai Kung. His photographs captured the artistry, imagination, and craftsmanship behind these vibrant works, later published in his classic book Neon City: Hong Kong at Night.

Keith will also reflect on how neon began to vanish, replaced by billboards and removed through urban redevelopment, forever changing the city’s streetscapes.

A fascinating lecture on “The Irish in Hong Kong: A Hidden Chapter in the Territory’s History” highlighted the wide-reaching Irish contribution to Hong Kong’s government, law, policing, education, and public life.

Arthur Kennedy, who developed Kennedy Town. William Caine, who founded what became the Hong Kong Police Force. And generations of professionals in Hong Kong’s medical sector whose influence continued long after.

With thanks to venue sponsor Tanner De Witt and speaker and author Mark O’Neill for an engaging evening.

📘 The book is available in bookstores.

Last Saturday, Royal Geographical Society - Hong Kong members enjoyed a memorable field trip to Sha Tau Kok, where guide Paul Chan from Walk In Hong Kong 活現香港shared fascinating insights into the relationship between STK and the Hakka villages nearby like K*k Po (谷埔), Luk Keng (鹿頸), Lai Chi Wo(荔枝窩)and Mui Tsz Lam (梅子林)

Along the way, we had the chance to meet all of the village chiefs of those villages all in one place! How a pleasant surprise!😆

Although we were unable to visit Chung Ying Street this time, lunch still came with a special highlight — the restaurant’s rooftop, where we all went up to greet tourists on the China side.

Special thanks to Charles from 沙頭角故事館 for hosting RGS-HK members, and to Paul for arranging such a thoughtful and engaging trip.

What does it mean to be courageous, curious, and resilient?

Students at ESF West Island School and SKH Chan Young Secondary School recently explored these ideas firsthand through talks by renowned explorer Benedict Allen, hosted as part of the Royal Geographical Society - Hong Kong School Outreach Programme.

By hearing the story of his 3,600-mile solo trek, they identified how risk-taking, resilience and being an open-minded inquirer are essential for their own journeys, Benedict encouraged students to embrace curiosity, open-mindedness, and the confidence to step into the unknown.

A huge thank you to both schools for hosting these inspiring sessions, and to Benedict Allen for helping nurture the adventurers of tomorrow.
