垂直基因轉移，即基因從親代「垂直」傳遞給後代，長久以來被認為是遺傳訊息在種群中流動的主要方式。

然而，這並不是唯一途徑：基因也可以在沒有親緣關係的物種之間「水平」移動，這種現象稱為「水平基因轉移」。過去水平基因轉移被認為非常罕見，但現在已知它曾經發生於幾乎所有生命分支中，有助物種快速適應環境。🧬

【Does Life Evolve Like a Branching Tree? 🪾】

Vertical gene transfer, i.e. the passing of genes from parents to offspring, has long been considered the main way genetic information moves through populations.

However, it is not the only pathway. Genes can also move horizontally between unrelated organisms in a process called “horizontal gene transfer”. Once thought to be rare, it is now recognised as a widespread phenomenon across nearly all branches of life and plays a key role in how organisms adapt in fast and surprising ways. 🧬
