【 Discovering The Wonders of the Gut Microbiome】

The human gut is a densely populated hub for microbiotas, and a central pillar of our digestion, immune system, and metabolism, where their composition and diversity are intricately linked to our overall health. “Exploring New Horizons” is thrilled to collaborate for the first time with the Microbiota I-Center (MagIC), leading students from Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No. 2 on a visit to its research centre, to understand how MagIC utilises innovative methods to develop microbial biomarkers and precision medicine treatments related to the human gut microbiome for improving human health.

During the visit, students gained a rare and valuable opportunity to enter the centre’s animal research facility, and observed various sophisticated research instruments, and gained a deeper understanding of how these technologies assist in enriching our knowledge of human microbes.

We are deeply grateful to MagIC for their support. This experience allowed students step out of the classroom and understand the forefront of scientific research, broadening their horizons and inspiring them to embark their future journeys in science!

【 :Exploring the Radiant Core of Our Galaxy🌌】

"If you were to travel to the centre of our galaxy, you would be surprised by how bright it is there."

The crowning achievement of Prof Reinhard Genzel, 2008 Shaw Laureate in Astronomy and 2020 Nobel Laureate in Physics, lies precisely in unravelling the secrets of this radiant core.

Through nearly three decades of high-resolution near-infrared astronomical observations, Prof Genzel and his team meticulously tracked the orbits of stars surrounding Sagittarius A* at the Galactic Centre, where the stellar density is millions of times greater than other zones. Their pioneering work provided the most definitive empirical evidence to date for the existence of a supermassive black hole, as predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

This fervour for exploring the unknown cosmic frontier resonates perfectly with the mission of the Hong Kong Laureate Forum, which is to connect contemporary and next-generation scientific leaders. By fostering cross-generational, cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary interactions through this world-class academic symposium, we are committed to facilitating profound dialogues between young scientists and visionary masters, while inspiring global youth to push the frontiers of cognition and carry forward the spark of scientific exploration.

【 Decoding the Science Behind Liver Cancer】

Students from Heung To Secondary School (Tseung Kwan O) recently visited Prof Carmen Wong’s Cancer Biology Lab at the Department of Pathology of The University of Hong Kong, as part of the “Exploring New Horizons” programme. Liver cancer remains a critical global health challenge. Prof Wong offered an insightful introduction to the lab’s research interests, focusing on the analysis of the causes of liver cancer and the mechanism behind cancer cell growth. Under the guidance of Prof Wong and her research team, students observed the morphology and characteristics of liver cancer cells firsthand through microscopes, and learned how scientists cultivate specific cells to clarify pathology and formulate innovative treatment strategies.

【 The “Impossible” Atmosphere🔭】

Astronomers have identified a tenuous atmosphere on (612533) 2002 XV93, a plutino located in the Kuiper Belt, using high-precision stellar occultation data.

Spanning only 500km in diameter, this small object defies standard volatile-retention models, as its weak gravity should theoretically preclude atmospheric stability. The recorded light curve before and after occultation exhibited gradual dimming and brightening, suggesting the presence of an atmosphere that refracted the transiting starlight. Subsequent modelling indicated an atmospheric pressure of 100 to 200 nanobars, which scientists propose could be sustained by cryovolcanic activity or a recent bolide impact.

This discovery not only demonstrates the cutting-edge sensitivity of indirect detection methods, but also, perhaps more importantly, necessitates a revision of planetary atmospheric formation theories when exploring Kuiper Belt worlds as primordial remnants of our Solar System.

【 Discovering the Path of Biomedical Research】

Exploring New Horizons recently brought students and teacher from the Bishop Hall Jubilee School to visit the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole. During the visit, students had the unique opportunity to tour the laboratories and engage directly with researchers to gain a deeper understanding of cutting-edge scientific work. The centre also specially arranged three lab demonstrations: observing cell lines through microscope to understand their vital role in research; identifying immune cells in human blood through Flow Cytometry; and exploring bacterial culturing within biosafety cabinets alongside an introduction to DNA sequencing.

Our thanks go to Dr Wuji Zhang and to the research team of the HKU-Pasteur Research Pole for their detailed introductions and arrangements.
