The 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) opened yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland. On the same day, GX in collaboration with the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, held a side event titled "Keep It Simple – No Mosquito, No Dengue" at the InterContinental Geneva, promoting to the world the "China Solution" of using physical means to prevent and control vector-borne diseases. This event marks a historic first, with a Hong Kong-based charitable organisation hosting a side event at the WHA.

Chairman LEUNG Chun-ying noted in his address that GX's experience in physical vector control has been published twice by The Lancet, an internationally authoritative medical journal, and is worthy of global reference. Prof. SHEN Hong-bing, Vice Minister of the National Health Commission of China and Administrator of the National Bureau of Disease Control, and H.E. José RAMOS-HORTA, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, delivered a keynote speech and a video commendation message respectively. Prof. LO Chung-mau, Secretary for Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Prof. WANG Jian-wei, Director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, were also among the attendees.

During the session, senior representatives from the Ministries of Health of Laos, Cambodia, Timor Leste and Vanuatu, together with experts from the WHO and UN agencies, unanimously affirmed the effectiveness of this "China Solution" in resource-limited settings. Several GX Youth Ambassadors were fully engaged throughout the event, gaining first-hand insight into the workings of global health governance.

HK01 Column Article: Belt & Road Sharing| Scaling Muddy Trails and Deep Gorges — The Lamp We Lit in a Mountain Village of Timor-Leste

GX’s latest article in the HK01 column "Belt & Road Sharing" is now published!

Written by Ms. ZHENG Tingyu, Project Officer of GX Foundation, it documents her first field trip to Timor-Leste, where she ventured deep into the Bobonaro project site in the western mountainous region. Navigating a rugged 100-kilometer mountain path, the team overcame broken bridges, thick mud, and heavy fog to finally reach the local village health center. There, learning how the "Five Mosquito Prevention Essentials," such as Mosquito lamps, safeguard the health of remote villagers turned what were once mere numbers on a report into the most tangible shield for the mountain community. It also allowed her to truly experience the profound meaning of spreading goodwill across mountains and seas, and putting "people-to-people connectivity" into practice.

Global Headquarters Open Day Concludes Successfully: First-Ever Unveiling of Red Brick Wall and Fireplace Relic

GX’s second Open Day on 26 April was a resounding success! No. 4 Hospital Road, a Grade II historic building with over a century of history, once served as a sanitation workers' dormitory safeguarding Hong Kong's public health. Today, it has been transformed into the Global Headquarters of GX, carrying forward the mission of international medical and health cooperation.

The event was hosted by Chairman LEUNG Chun-ying, who shared the building’s historical significance and GX’s vision for global humanitarian assistance. Guided tours led by architectural heritage conservation consultant Mr. Caspar YAM received an enthusiastic response. Participants enjoyed a rare, close-up look at the newly unveiled original red brick wall and the fireplace relic from the former Superintendent's Quarters, gaining in-depth insight into the structural features of Hong Kong’s early sanitary architecture.

Also on display were our "Five Mosquito Prevention Essentials" and Disaster Preparedness Kits used in Belt and Road countries. GX Youth Ambassadors were on hand to explain the technical principles and frontline effectiveness of these life-saving tools.

Background:
Dengue fever is endemic in over 100 countries. 2024-2025 saw record numbers, exceeding 19.72 million cases and over 15,000 dengue-related deaths. Few of the current dengue control guidelines explore or review innovative and community-level interventions.

GX Foundation has used low-cost physical means to successfully control Dengue since 2020 in 10 countries across 4 continents, using Mosquito Lamps, Sticky Fly Traps, Bed Nets, Rapid Dengue Test Kits and Education Materials.

Research results of the projects in Timor-Leste and Honduras were published in the March 2025 and March 2026 editions of The Lancet.

In addition to hospitals and local communities, GX Dengue physical control projects cover airports, ports, highways, railways and waterways to kill mosquitoes in their tracks.

GX will share in detail our experience in physical dengue control.

GX Completes 29,000th Free Cataract Surgery Globally in Kiffa, Mauritania!

This milestone was reached during the 10th cohort of our project in Mauritania. Fatimetou, 64, was the first patient to be treated in this new cohort. Having been blind for 18 months, she described her life as being "trapped in a dark room" until she was referred to us by a relative. Post-surgery, she said with excitement: "I can clearly see the faces of all my family members again!"

Another patient, Meilimnine, who is deaf and mute, came for surgery with the help of her family members who assisted in translation. She had been blind for two years and was unable to participate in any social activities. By chance, she met a caregiver at the hospital who had previously undergone surgery with GX and thus found us. After the surgery, her vision was restored, and she expressed, "Thank you to GX and the Chinese medical team. Here, I have received the best treatment."

To date, GX has helped complete over 3,000 free cataract surgeries in Mauritania.

Invited by the China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), GX today attended the “Second China–Cambodia–Thailand Track II Dialogue” at the Diaoyutai Hotel in Beijing, aiming to implement the Fuxian Meeting Consensus and foster a favourable public opinion environment for peace.

Dr. P**N Yen-yen, Grace, a Hong Kong-based physician, as well as GX’s Director (Southeast Asia) delivered remarks at the plenary session. She also participated in a roundtable discussion on humanitarian relief, gaining in-depth understanding of the medical and public health challenges faced by border communities amid conflict while sharing GX’s professional insights.

China has been actively engaged in mediation since the outbreak of the Thailand–Cambodia conflict. On 28–29 December 2025, a meeting was convened and hosted by WANG Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, together with the foreign ministers and military officials of China, Cambodia, and Thailand, at Fuxian Lake in Yuxi, Yunnan (known as the “Fuxian Meeting”), laying the groundwork for a ceasefire and peace dialogue. Following this, China subsequently held two Track II dialogues between the three countries including the current one. At this meeting, the CFAU invited representatives from think tanks, the media, and non-governmental humanitarian organisations from both countries to gather in Beijing. The dialogue aimed to promote communication, strengthen mutual trust, and build consensus, together advancing peaceful development. The atmosphere was cordial, all parties actively spoke up and commended China’s mediation efforts, proposing a range of ideas to help chart a path toward peace.

Since December 2022, GX has been developing projects in Cambodia. It has successfully addressed backlogged cataract cases in Prey Veng Province and Kampong Speu Province, completing more than 6,600 surgeries. At the same time, GX has carried out dengue fever prevention and control initiatives in Kampong Speu Province, along the Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville Expressway, around Techo International Airport, and through the Funan–Techo integrated water resources management project, with the aim of building a health protection network for local residents. Going forward, GX will closely monitor developments and provide support within its capacity.

It is a great honour for GX to have been invited to attend and speak at today’s meeting, and to receive particular attention and recognition from representatives of Thailand and Cambodia.
