Danaid Butterfly Research Hong Kong Attempting understand the migratory behaviors of danaid ("dah-NAY-id") butterflies in Asia. Help us by reporting tagged butterflies @ danaidhk.com!

We are a small group of researchers from HKU attempting understand the overwintering and migratory behaviors of danaid (“dah-NAY-id”) butterflies in Asia. We are tagging butterflies with URL-bearing stickers and asking the public to report their sightings.

We tagged male 𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘦𝘢 𝘮𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘶𝘴 #9270 at our Public Symposium on Wintering Danaid Butterflies at HKU on Oct 5th. Nine days later, we recaptured him in Tai Lam! As the “crow” flies, this butterfly traveled 13.7km to a wooded site in NW Hong Kong.

We are hopeful to observe more movement in the coming weeks as the temperature drops. 🌡️ 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗱𝗵𝗸.𝗰𝗼𝗺!

SEASON SUMMARY: HONG KONG, PART III

Each year, we visit sites across Hong Kong on a regular rotation to measure changes in the abundance and composition of danaid species over the course of the autumn and winter.

Last year, we tagged the most butterflies at Fan Lau Peninsula and Pui O Beach – both on Lantau Island. While we avoid disclosing the exact location of sensitive winter aggregations, we think it is important to convey the general location and spread of our survey sites. Most sites fall within country parks and special areas, and all sites are surveyed with the permission of AFCD.

DANAID : CHASING BUTTERFLIES
A film by Daphne Wong
4K / Cantonese & English
Preview Oct 5 at HKU

Come winter, in Hong Kong’s stream valleys, thousands of danaid butterflies stay motionless on trees to overwinter. Unlike the well-studied monarch migrations in North America, the migration phenomenon of Hong Kong’s danaid butterflies remains a mystery. In this film we learn about the extraordinary lives of danaid butterflies by following butterfly researchers, Emily and Fung, who are tagging thousands of danaid butterflies every year, hoping to unfold these danaids’ secrets - where do they come from and where are they going? In order to track their movements, they rely on the public to report sightings of tagged danaids. But they must act fast, as these wintering sites are quickly disappearing.
