In March 2026, 79 Indonesian women and men returned home after being freed from forced online scamming operations in Myanmar through a cross‑border collaboration supported by IJM and the governments of Indonesia, Thailand, and Myanmar.

Trafficked with false promises of legitimate work, survivors were coerced into conducting online scams under threats, intimidation, and exploitative conditions. Now safe, they are receiving trauma‑informed care, legal assistance, and long‑term support to rebuild their lives.

All 79 individuals have expressed their willingness to provide testimony to law enforcement. IJM teams and our local partners remain committed to walking alongside them and providing the support needed until justice is served.

Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has arrested two Thai suspects for allegedly trafficking two Thai nationals—Nina and Sid (pseudonyms)—to forced scam compounds in Cambodia.

Both survivors were recruited on Facebook with promises of legitimate call center jobs, good pay, and proper work permits. Instead, they were smuggled across the border without immigration checks and forced into exhausting 12 hour days running fake loan schemes and later crypto scams targeting Thai victims.

Their IDs were confiscated, wages withheld, and they were told they must pay 200,000 THB to escape—while guarded heavily and prevented from leaving.

Thanks to Nina’s cry for help, IJM Cambodia, IJM Thailand, Thai authorities and concerned embassies collaborated to secure their rescue in June 2022. IJM supported their safe return and walked with them through aftercare, legal processes, and rebuilding their lives. Today, both survivors are safely home and employed.

IJM continues partnering with governments across Southeast Asia to dismantle cross border trafficking networks driving forced scamming. Since 2021, IJM has assisted nearly 2,700 victims and supported 15 convictions of perpetrators—including a trafficker in Thailand sentenced to 30 years.

Last week at the World Economic Forum, IJM CEO Gary Haugen joined global leaders to speak on a hard truth: Cybercrime has real victims.

Across Southeast Asia, criminal networks are trafficking people into forced labor to run online scam operations.

That phishing email or fraudulent call you receive? It may have been sent by someone working under threats, coercion, and violence.

💸 Global losses reached up to USD $85 billion last year — but the human cost is far greater.

Gary Haugen put it plainly: caring for survivors is not just morally right — it’s key to solving the problem. “Treating survivors well is the path to the practical solution.”

📣The call from Davos was clear: We need urgent, coordinated action to protect people, strengthen justice systems, and dismantle the trafficking operations driving cyberscams.
