【Biological Carbon Sequestration | How do vegetation ecosystems capture carbon?】
When you’re hiking and enjoying the lush greenery of Lantau, have you ever wondered how these plants actually help "cool down" the Earth? This process is known as "Biological Carbon Sequestration." Let’s break down how this "underground vault" works:

1️⃣ Absorption: Through photosynthesis, plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into organic carbon. Part of this is used for growth—stored in leaves, trunks, and roots—while the rest is transported into the soil.

2️⃣ Pumping into the soil: Dead leaves and branches (litterfall), along with "root exudates" released during growth, carry carbon elements deep into the soil.

3️⃣ Locking it away: With the help of soil microbes, this carbon is transformed into stable organic matter that is difficult to decompose, allowing it to be stored in the soil for the long term.

This process doesn't just "lock carbon" within Lantau’s forests; it also reduces greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to help mitigate global warming. This is why we must protect our green spaces!🌲

Feel free to share this with your friends! Give us a Like👍 and follow us to learn more about the importance of vegetation and soil conservation!

【International Day of Forest】

March 21 is the International Day of Forests, and this year’s theme is “Forests and economies”

Forests are not only the “lungs of the Earth” but also a key to addressing climate change. Through carbon sequestration, forests continuously absorb and store atmospheric carbon dioxide, playing a crucial role in mitigating global warming. Besides their valuable ecological service, forests are also a cornerstone of sustainable economic development. From providing renewable timber and food, to safeguarding water sources and boosting agricultural productivity, forests support our prosperity in diverse ways. As we move toward a sustainable bioeconomy, the nature-based solutions offered by forests can replace carbon-intensive materials while creating new economic opportunities.

🌱 Let’s act together to protect forests and safeguard our home.

【World Soil Day | These Carbon Storage Secrets You Need to Know】

Dec 5 is World Soil Day—and soil is the core focus of our research project! As FAO notes, soil is Earth’s largest terrestrial carbon pool, storing 3 times more carbon than the atmosphere. Yet 33% of global soil is degraded, risking this critical carbon store.

Fun fact: 2-3 cm of soil may take 1,000 years to form, and a spoonful holds more microbes than Earth’s population. Sustainable soil management could boost yield by 58% and lock more carbon—let’s protect this vital carbon pool!

[Feng Shui Woods: The Great “Carbon Pool” From Ancient Wisdom]

🌳 Feng shui woods refer to forests preserved adjacent to villages in southern China under the guidance of traditional fengshui philosophy. They embody cultural beliefs centered on praying for blessings and preventing disasters, while also serve as an important spatial component of villages. The luxuriant vegetation is not only the spiritual symbol passed down from the ancestors, but also the natural barrier for homeland protection.

🍃 Beyond their cultural significance, feng shui woods show remarkable ecological value. Under the conservation efforts of local villagers, these woodlands evolved into mature and species-diverse forest ecosystems. This is why such unique and high ecological value woodlands have persisted despite centuries of human activities. 《Hong Kong Native Trees for Urban Biodiversity and Carbon Storage》 suggested that the carbon storage of feng shui woods in Hong Kong was over 160 tons of carbon per hectare on average which approached the level of tropical rainforests (approximately 200 tons per hectare). This underscores their great potential of carbon sequestration and non-negligible role in climate change mitigation.

💡 Compared to plantations or secondary forests, feng shui woods feature more stable structures, older tree ages, and richer biodiversity, thereby demonstrating stronger carbon sink function. They represent "time capsules" bridging human culture and nature, as well as indigenous wisdom in addressing the climate crisis.
