Every year on 22 April, Earth Day 🌏 is one of the world’s most important environmental events! It’s not only about raising public awareness of the environment — also a call for us to take action together.

This year, the theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” It emphasizes that environmental protection isn’t something that depends only on policies or companies. Instead, it starts with the daily actions of each individual, and it gathers global strength to continuously protect our home.

The seminar is part of the research project funded by the Lantau Conservation Fund – "Assessing the Contribution of Lantau's Coastal Wetlands to Carbon Sequestration in Hong Kong." It is organized by the Lantau Blue Carbon Research Team from the Department of Geography and Resource Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, aiming to share the research content and findings with the public.

【 沉積物指標層實驗 - 如何進行？】

上回提及量度垂直沉積物累積嘅速度，今次就同大家分享實際操作💪﹕

1️⃣首先將長石粉（指標層）均勻咁鋪喺泥土表面
2️⃣指標層設置咗6個月同12個月後，使用液態氮收集泥土土芯樣本
3️⃣樣本取出後，量度長石粉喺泥土表層下嘅深度，之後會用於計算土壤沉積速率

聽起嚟似乎好簡單🤔？實際上，指標層有機會受到環境嘅干擾，例如小動物或者颱風嘅影響。所以喺實地操作中，我地研究團隊會仔細觀察、管理同記錄。

【 Sediment Marker Horizon – How is it conducted? 】
Last time, we mentioned the vertical sediment accretion. This time, let’s share with you all the actual procedures 💪:

1️⃣ Firstly, evenly apply the feldspar powder (the marker horizon) on the ground surface
2️⃣ After the marker horizon has been set for 6 and 12 months, collect soil core samples using liquid nitrogen
3️⃣ After retrieving the samples, measure the depth of feldspar beneath the soil surface, which will be used to calculate the soil accretion rate.

Does that sound simple🤔? In reality, the marker horizon may be subject to environmental disturbances, such as the interferences of small animals or typhoons. Therefore, during the fieldwork, our research team carefully observes, manages, and records everything.

【 藍碳研究做什麼 #5 - 沉積物指標層實驗 】

水流💧喺自然環境中，既可以將有機物質帶入濱海濕地進行沉澱，亦可以沖刷走泥土。

沉積物指標（Marker Horizon Method）係一種典型嘅方法，用於📏測量垂直沉積物累積嘅速度，並且常見於濕地嘅研究。佢背後原理就係透過建立穩定嘅指標層，令到研究團隊可以清晰地追蹤同分析沉積物喺濕地上嘅變化🔍，進一步了解環境對濕地藍碳嘅影響。

【 What Does Blue Carbon Research Do #5 – Sediment Marker Horizon 】

In the natural environment, water flow 💧 can both transport organic matter into coastal wetlands for deposition and erode the soil.

The Marker Horizon Method is a typical approach used to 📏measure the vertical sediment accretion, and is commonly found in wetlands research. Its underlying principle is to establish a stable marker horizon, allowing our research team to clearly track and analyze changes in sediment within wetlands 🔍, furthering our understanding of the impact of the environment on blue carbon in these areas.

【世界濕地日World Wetland Day】

「🌏世界濕地日」嘅確立係紀念1971年2月2日，世界各國係伊朗拉姆薩爾簽署《濕地公約》，承諾共同保護同善用全球濕地。香港大約有6,600公頃嘅濕地，當中包括紅樹林、泥灘、沼澤等等。

2026年世界濕地日嘅主題為「濕地與傳統知識」，重點在於宣揚傳統知識係維護濕地生態系統以及保護文化身份中嘅重要角色。

【World Wetland Day】

The establishment of "🌏World Wetlands Day" commemorates 2 February 1971, when countries around the world signed the "Ramsar Convention on Wetlands" in Ramsar, Iran, committing to the joint protection and sustainable use of global wetlands. In Hong Kong, there are approximately 6,600 hectares of wetlands, including mangroves, mudflats, swamps, and more.



The theme for World Wetlands Day 2026 is "Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge," focusing on promoting the important role of traditional knowledge in maintaining wetland ecosystems and protecting cultural identity.

【 濱海濕地的泥土是一樣的嗎? 】

答案係...唔一樣❗

濱海濕地長期被水淹嘅土壤主要處於厭氧狀況，令到佢地具有明顯嘅泥土特徵。特別係土壤顏色🎨方面，通常呈現黑色或深啡色，咁係因為有機物質嘅累積，再加上缺氧環境下土壤成分嘅變化所致。

然而，土壤係可以千變萬化。即使係同樣嘅缺氧環境入面，唔同類型嘅濱海濕地土壤仍然會因為沉積物來源、植被同地理位置等因素而有所唔同。

【 Is all the soil in coastal wetlands the same? 】

The answer is... no, it’s different❗

The soil in coastal wetlands under prolonged flooding primarily exists in an anaerobic state, which leads to its unique characteristics. Particularly in terms of soil color 🎨, it usually appears black or dark brown, due to the accumulation of organic matter and changes in soil composition under anaerobic conditions.

However, soil can vary greatly. Even within the same anaerobic environment, different types of coastal wetland soils can differ due to factors such as the source of sediment, vegetation, and geographical location.

【《生物多樣性策略及行動計劃》更新】
政府今日公布更新的《生物多樣性策略及行動計劃》（《計劃》），闡明未來10年香港為保護自然生態和支持可持續發展將採取的策略及優先行動，以助力國家及全球實現人與自然和諧共生的目標。

更新《計劃》提出四個策略範疇，包括自然保育、深化主流化、能力建設及伙伴協作，當中共有30個優先行動及81個優先項目。政府期望繼續與社會各界齊心協力，深化香港的生物多樣性保育工作，令香港成為可持續且宜居的美麗城市。

平時夏天大家可能會去沙灘挖泥沙🏖️ 你有無諗過，挖泥沙其實都係研究嘅重要一環呢？

當然我地唔係用玩具鏟⚠️ 研究團隊會用土壤柱樣採集器係濱海濕地收集深度達1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣厘米嘅泥土土柱 樣本。之後，土柱樣本會按唔同深度間距切分為子樣本，並運送到實驗室作進一步分析🧪

【 What Does Blue Carbon Research Do #4 – Soil Sampling 】
In the summer, many of us might go to the beach to dig in the sand🏖️ Have you ever thought that digging in the sand is actually an important part of research?

Of course, we're not using toy shovels⚠️ Our research team uses a soil core sampler to collect soil core samples from coastal wetlands, reaching depths of up to 100 centimeters. Each sample is then divided into several sub-samples based on depth and sent to the laboratory for further analysis🧪

「🌏世界土壤日」係2014年成為官方國際紀念日 ，旨在引起全球對土壤係農業發展、生態系統功能同糧食安全中作用嘅關注。2025年世界土壤日嘅主題為「健康土壤，健康城市」，重點在於關注城市土壤嘅角色以及土壤密封同城市化帶來嘅挑戰。

分享少少關於土壤嘅事實：

【World Soil Day】

🌏World Soil Day became an official international day in 2014 to raise global awareness about the role soils play in agricultural development, ecosystem functions and food security. The theme for 2025 is “Healthy soils for healthy cities”, which focuses on the role of soils in cities and the challenges posed by soil sealing and urbanization.

Some facts about soil:
📌 Soil is not a dirt, it is alive
📌 To produce 2-3cm of soil, it can take up to 1,000 years
📌 Soil is home to nearly 59% of the species on Earth
