Easy”
The 2016 Youth Festival (2.7.2016)
1. Introduction
It is now over 30 years since the first case of HIV infection was reported in Hong Kong in 1984. What was once a deadly disease has become a chronic illness which can be controlled by antiretroviral treatment, a
nd the death rate has been greatly reduced. Despite this, awareness and prevention of AIDS is still lacking in our community.
As released by the latest HIV/AIDS statistics of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) in 2015, a total of 725 additional cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection were reported. The number of new HIV cases was 11 percent up on the 651 recorded in 2014. To our great concern is that there has been a huge increase in those whose age between 10-19 years old.
Our Centre is very concerned that young people generally have low risk awareness of AIDS. Under the added influence of drugs, many of them may engage in unsafe s*x. Furthermore, even if youngsters suspect that they have been infected, they are afraid to, or are not aware of, where to seek help or get tested. In view of the above situation, the Youth Festival is aimed at strengthening and empowering young people with correct and sufficient s*xual health information and skills.
