Slow, spiny, and surprisingly agile in the trees, the Brazilian Porcupine is one of Guyana's most unique nocturnal mammals. Using its strong prehensile tail like a fifth limb, it moves through the rainforest canopy, foraging for fruits and bark. Look out for this prickly fellow across our protected areas, especially in the Kanuku Mountains. โ›ฐ๏ธ

Protected areas are a key part of that action. PAT finances the protection of Guyanaโ€™s forests, wetlands, rivers, and biodiversity because these ecosystems help to store carbon, regulate water systems, and protect ecosystems that support both people and nature.

Investing in the environment is taking action for our future!

The Board and Staff of the Protected Areas Trust (PAT) recently met with Jason Hamlin, Senior Vice President and Wealth Advisor at UBS Financial Services, for our annual in-country investment meeting.

The discussion explored insights from the previous investment cycles, portfolio performance of PATโ€™s endowment, current market developments, alongside emerging financial trends shaping the global economy. Happening Now! ED Oleta Williams and Cuso Volunteer Maurissa Smith are participating in the National Seminar on Energy Efficiency and Conservation being held at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre.

Organised by the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) with support from the World Bank under the Caribbean Energy Efficiency and Green Buildings Project, the seminar brings together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable practices. Greater connectivity for the Kanashen Amerindian Protected Area! ๐Ÿ›œ

Our team recently visited KAPA to support Conservation International and the Protected Areas Commission during consultations for the development of the new Management Plan. During the visit, internet equipment was handed over to the community to strengthen monitoring patrols and communication within the protected area.

This support is made possible under a grant implemented by the PAC and the Kanashen Village Council with funds made possible by Conservation International and German Development Bank.
