Stamp of the Week ✨

The British Guiana One-Cent Magenta is widely regarded as the world’s rarest and most valuable stamp. It was first issued in 1856 in British Guiana during a shortage of postage stamps when a local printer was commissioned to produce provisional stamps to maintain postal services.

It was discovered in 1873 by Louis Vernon Vaughan in Georgetown and has since passed through the hands of several collectors, becoming a legendary piece in philatelic history.

Stay tuned as each week we feature a stamp from our rich philatelic collection.

GRAND OPENING OF PARLIAMENT BUILDING 1839

(Guyana's Parliament Building was originally known as the Public Buildings. Constructed between 1829 and 1834)
____________________________
In Georgetown’s heart where Brickdam lies,
A stately house began to rise;
On greenheart logs its strength was laid,
A noble hall the builders made.

*
In 1834 completed the building stood,
With stuccoed walls of stone-like good;
By Hadfield’s hand the plans were drawn,
A place where public rule was born.

*
My ancestor Paterson, Kemp, and McKenzie too,
Raised up the work both strong and true;
While Hadfield, Booker, gathered near,
To mark the day with pride and cheer.

*
Now Guyana’s Assembly meets inside,
Beneath Castellani’s ceiling wide;
Where history’s voice and laws agree,
A house of a nation’s destiny. 🌿📜

The beautiful Wakili Totem Pole, can be found in the Guyana National Park, and was carved by Lokono Artist, Mr. Oswald Hussein .
The pole tells the ancient story of Man’s abiding respect for the forest and all that it provides. The carvings on the 20 foot Purple Heart pole depict various hand chiseled animals and spirit guardians which represent the delicate balance which exists between man and nature.
