Indian Arrival Day in Guyana commemorates May 5, 1838, when the first Indian indentured labourers arrived aboard the ships Whitby and Hesperus. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Guyana’s history following the abolition of slavery, as thousands of Indians were brought to work on sugar plantations.
Upon arrival, many faced exhausting labour, strict plantation rules, and limited freedom.
Despite these hardships, they showed resilience, strength, and the determination to survive and build a future.
Even in a new land, they preserved their traditions and way of life.
Cultural practices such as puja, weddings, and extended family gatherings remained central to their identity.
Their languages, including Hindi, Bhojpuri, and Urdu, influenced everyday speech and continue to shape Guyanese Creole today.
Religion played a major role in their lives, with many practicing Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, seen today in mandirs (temples), masjids (mosques), and churches across the country.
Festivals such as Diwali (Festival of Lights), Phagwah (Holi), and Eid continue to be celebrated with pride and unity.
Their influence is also reflected in Guyana’s cuisine, with dishes such as dhal puri, roti, chicken curry, aloo and channa, pholourie, and seven curry becoming staples of national culture.
Music and celebration remain vibrant through chutney music, tassa drumming, bhajans, and Bollywood-inspired dance, supported by instruments like the dholak, harmonium, and tassa drums.
Indian Arrival Day is not only a remembrance of the past, but also a celebration of heritage, identity, and contribution.
The descendants of these immigrants have helped shape every aspect of life in Guyana, from agriculture and business to education, politics, and the arts.
As we reflect on this history, we honour the sacrifices of our ancestors and recognize the strength and legacy they have passed down through generations.
From the struggles of the past to the pride of the present, their legacy lives on in every part of Guyana.
Best Wishes
