A Reflection on the Passing of Maulana/Imam Sayyid Sahib رحمه الله
إِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
A few days have passed since the departure of our respected brother, teacher, and scholar, Maulana Sayyid Sahib رحمه الله, yet the reality of this loss continues to weigh heavily upon our hearts.
The passing of a scholar is not merely the loss of a person. It is the loss of knowledge, wisdom, guidance, experience, and a living connection to the sacred teachings of Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, Allah does not take away knowledge by snatching it away from the people; rather, He takes away knowledge by taking away the scholars.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
Every scholar who departs leaves behind a void that cannot easily be replaced. Hasan al-Baṣrī رحمه الله said:
“The death of a scholar is a breach in Islam that nothing can repair as long as night and day continue to alternate.”
The Muslim community of Guyana has witnessed such a loss with the passing of Maulana Sayyid Sahib رحمه الله. For years, he served the Deen with sincerity, teaching, advising, leading the prayers, and guiding countless individuals towards Allah سبحانه وتعالى. His contribution to the preservation and transmission of Islamic knowledge will remain a source of ongoing benefit, by the will of Allah.
The passing of our scholars should also serve as a reminder to the Ummah of the importance of preserving sacred knowledge, supporting our institutions, honouring our scholars, and ensuring that knowledge is passed from one generation to the next. As Sayyiduna Salmān al Farsi رضي الله عنه reminded us, communities remain upon goodness when knowledge continues to be inherited from those who came before them.
Today, we mourn the loss of a scholar, but we also reflect upon the responsibility that remains with us. The greatest tribute to our departed scholars is to preserve their legacy by learning, practicing, teaching, and supporting the work of Deen.
The Jamiyyatul Ulamaa of Guyana extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, students, associates, and the wider Muslim community affected by this loss.
We ask Allah سبحانه وتعالى to forgive Maulana Sayyid Sahib رحمه الله, illuminate his grave, accept his lifelong service to Islam, make his knowledge a continuous charity for him, and grant him the highest ranks in Jannatul Firdaus.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَاجْعَلِ الْجَنَّةَ مَأْوَاهُ
