Every year, people travel from the United States to visit Wakami's communities.

They come to experience our work firsthand, meet the women and families behind the stories, and discover Guatemala in a way few people ever do.

Doña Enma's story
Fifteen years ago, stability felt out of reach.
Her husband had no steady work. She spent her days shelling peas in someone else's home, earning just enough to get by, but never enough to get ahead.

Then everything shifted.
Her husband learned to weave bracelets for Wakami and taught her the craft himself. For the first time, she had an income of her own; one she could build from home, without leaving her young children behind.
That independence changed how she saw herself.

"Now everyone knows I bring in income too," she says, with unmistakable pride.

With her earnings, she transformed her tin-roofed house into a real home: two new rooms, a solid roof, a future built with her own hands. 🏠

Hilda's story
As the only woman among seven brothers, her days were spent caring for everyone else, without a salary, without a voice, without a choice.

She had no income of her own. Which meant no say over her life, and no way to protect the dreams of her daughters.

Fifteen years ago, Hilda and her family lived in a rented house. Owning a home felt impossible. So did imagining a different future. Then she began working with Wakami and received her first paycheck.

For the first time, she contributed to her household with money she had earned herself. That feeling changed something in her, permanently. "I felt like I owned the world," she says.

With a steady income, Hilda built the home she had always dreamed of. But the story didn't stop there. Her daughters, Yanira, now a psychology graduate, and Nilsen, who just graduated from high school, broke cycles that had limited women in their community for generations.

A house with four walls is not the same as a safe home.

In many rural communities, home should be the safest place for a family. But without clean water, enough food, or any cushion for emergencies, it often isn't.

That's why, through our Smart Investments methodology, we work across the areas that matter most: health, nutrition, savings, and home production; all connected, all reinforcing each other.

Through hands-on workshops, families learn about balanced nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention. Family gardens give them access to fresh food grown close to home, reducing dependence on outside sources and improving what ends up on the table every day.

Smart Investments brings this to life through two core programs. Savings Groups help families organize their income, handle unexpected emergencies, and plan for goals that once felt out of reach. Rural women face a double barrier: they're far from markets, and markets rarely come looking for them.

Through our Market Access methodology, we connect rural women's enterprises with local and global buyers, creating consistent, reliable income that doesn't depend on luck or season.

That's where Wakami's first methodology begins: Inclusive Business.

We work with groups of women to formalize them as enterprises. They learn artisan techniques that meet market standards, and how to work together as a team; not just as individuals trying to get by.

The shift is significant. A woman who joins a group goes from working alone at home to being part of something bigger. She has a role. She has accountability. She has colleagues.

She wasn't meant to dream. But she now holds a granddaughter who will never have to fight for that right

A girl who will grow up in a world her grandmother fought, quietly and steadily, to make different.

Different from Marla's world. Different even from her daughters, too.

And that, she says, is her greatest dream, still unfolding.

"I achieve my own dreams by watching my daughters achieve theirs."

She wants to see them finish university. To see them become women who feel valued, who dream freely, and who reach back to help others. Women her granddaughter will one day look up to and recognize herself in.

She thinks sometimes about the woman she used to be. The one who asked permission to leave her own home. The one who believed, for too long, that her voice didn't count.

"I would tell that woman that she waited too long to change," she says. "But I am grateful. Because without everything I lived through, I would not be where I am today."
