One of our former interpreters has been taken by the Taliban. We don’t have more information and out of an abundance of caution will not share more details except to say that he is one of the best people we have ever met.
He is selfless and humble and we were overwhelmingly proud to have him as part of our team.

GIVING TUESDAY
Giving Tuesday is an international donation day, where people from all over the world give a little to charities and individuals in need who are experiencing hardship this winter. This Eudaimonia Medical Services are joining up with 30 other humanitarian organisations across Europe and Lebanon. Our theme is “More than Survival”, which for us means always doing that little bit extra to ensure that people have a more dignified future. Check out our page here: www.morethansurvival.org

please think about us when you donate on Giving Tuesday!

THE C WORDS - Cancer and Covid.
While COVID-19 took over healthcare systems worldwide, life-limiting and chronic disease did not magically disappear. In fact, in many cases, it got worse.

Asylum seekers who arrived to Greece with complicated medical issues were often unable to access life-saving care due to Covid-related healthcare closures. While this reality impacted all people, asylum-seekers whose claims for asylum were denied have since lost healthcare insurance, meaning accessing necessary diagnostic treatment has become nearly impossible. In Lesvos and in Athens, we see people who live with cancer having to neglect their illness due to inaccessibility. Could you live like this?
-
When we learn of patients in this situation, we do an initial assessment with them to understand exactly what is needed. We then are able to get appointments, provide interpretation, accompany for emotional support, and ensure that they no longer are having to live with uncertainty. By providing this individualized care, we hope to get people the answers they need to make informed decisions about their life and livelihood.

EVICTED | HOMELESS | SICK
2022 has been an exceptionally difficult year for refugees and asylum seekers in Europe. In February 2022, the closure of the ESTIA program in Greece was announced, which has, for the last several years, provided people with housing. As a result, thousands of people find themselves evicted and living on the streets or in precarious conditions. In some cases, these forced evictions have led to violence.
We receive dozens of desperate messages from people who find themselves locked out of their apartments, unsure of where to go and how to continue. In many cases, these people and their children have serious medical conditions. We do our best to not lose touch with these people and work with a network of organizations to find (temporary) solutions.

ATHENS

Our recently expanded project in Athens has been hugely successful!

We are focusing on three key points to ensure vulnerable populations get the best possible care.

• Communication
• Collaboration
• Relentless advocacy for people’s right to healthcare

This approach has meant that we’ve been able to help more than 800 people

Inter-European Deportation - Sending sick families from Iceland to Athens

Last week, over a dozen asylum-seekers were deported from Iceland to Greece by force. In one case, a man who requires a wheelchair was forcefully removed from his wheelchair and was not provided any alternative!

"The Icelandic Red Cross, Reykjavik Branch has issued a detailed report citing numerous sources that concludes, as has been done many times before, that deporting people to Greece, and children in particular, will send them to a life lived on the street with little to no access to housing, jobs or healthcare"

We can attest to the despair that awaits asylum seekers and recognized refugees who arrive in Athens and hope this practice does not become common place.

Single mothers
Being a single mother is the hardest job in the world. In Athens, if you are a single refugee mother with four children, and one needs to see a doctor as an emergency in the middle of the night, what would you do? Where would you go? How would you tell the doctors what was wrong? Where would you leave your kids?
We are working on a plan to respond to these harrowing, and far too frequent situations so that in urgent situations, single mothers can focus on their baby's health and not worry about anything else.

Now what?!

The time that people spend on the Aegean islands has decreased substantially. But it doesn't mean they are prepared for Athens. When refugees arrive in the big city, they must figure out transportation, accommodation, access to social services, healthcare...and often, they have to navigate this with little or no Greek language. We regularly see people we met in Lesvos struggling to meet their most basic needs.
